How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
An explicitly treated stiff decay mode is unstable for a large step
Example
Take the scalar decay equation with and . Treat the whole stiff term explicitly, so and . IMEX Euler gives amplification ; for its magnitude exceeds one although the exact solution decays. If instead this same term is implicit, the amplification is , which lies in for every . This scalar comparison does not imply matrix stability for nonnormal operators.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: , , and .
One-step IMEX Euler with an implicit branch and residual status: the exact-step equation is .
The real exponential function and the number by a power series, The exponential function is smooth and , and The chain rule for total derivatives: : is differentiable with derivative , so solves and .
Verification
With and , [F1] gives , so after steps the numerical value is . If , then and for every . By [F2], is the exact solution, and [F3] gives .
With and , the equation in [F1] becomes . Since , [F4] gives . Thus the implicit treatment damps every such scalar step, while the explicit treatment grows whenever .
At the boundary , the explicit amplification is , whose magnitude is exactly one. Thus the strict instability condition is ; equality is neutral for this scalar test equation.
Depends on
- One-step IMEX Euler with an implicit branch and residual status
- Additive autonomous ODE partitions
- The exponential is positive and satisfies $\exp(-x)=1/\exp(x)$
- The real exponential function and the number $e$ by a power series
- Inverses of positives are positive, and reciprocation reverses order
- The chain rule for total derivatives: $D(g\circ f)(a)=Dg(f(a))\circ Df(a)$
- The exponential function is smooth and $(\exp)'=\exp$
- The exponential function is strictly increasing

31 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
