How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Tensor multilinear interpolation has a second-derivative error bound
Statement
Let and let be the coordinate mesh widths in Periodic tensor grids and multilinear interpolation. Then The estimate includes grid nodes and periodic cell endpoints.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A periodic function , positive coordinate widths , and the tensor-product interpolant.
Periodic tensor grids and multilinear interpolation: the tensor interpolant is the product of the one-dimensional linear endpoint weights in each coordinate.
Pointwise Lagrange interpolation remainder: for two distinct interpolation nodes , the degree-one interpolant to a function satisfies at a node and otherwise for some between the nodes and query point.
Periodic multilinear interpolation is convex and L-infinity contractive: each one-coordinate linear interpolation operator is nonexpansive in the sup norm because its endpoint weights are nonnegative and sum to one.
Proof
Fix one coordinate interval of length and hold the other coordinates fixed. If is an endpoint, the linear interpolant is exact by [F2]. Otherwise [F2] gives . Writing , the product equals , hence the one-coordinate error is at most .
Write the tensor interpolant as , where interpolates only coordinate . The telescoping identity follows by cancellation of adjacent terms.
Apply the one-coordinate estimate of step 1.1 to each term before its preceding-coordinate operators. Every preceding product is sup-norm nonexpansive by [F3], so the norm of the th term is at most . Summing the bounds proves the result. Periodic endpoint cells use the periodic lift of , which has the same derivative suprema, and at every grid node the interpolation is exact by the definition.

15 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
