How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Trace of a product of Hermitian matrices is real
Statement
For Hermitian matrices , , the trace is real.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: and in an orthonormal coordinate basis; trace is the diagonal sum, including the empty sum when .
In orthonormal bases, the matrix of the adjoint is the conjugate transpose of the matrix: the matrix of an adjoint in orthonormal bases is the conjugate transpose.
Adjoints satisfy , , , and : for compatible finite-dimensional maps.
For and , : for compatible rectangular matrices, .
The trace as the sum of the diagonal entries: trace is the sum of the diagonal entries, and the empty diagonal sum is zero.
Proof
Conjugating the diagonal sum in [F5] entry by entry and using [F2] gives . For , both sides are the empty sum .
By [F1] and [F3], . Then [F4] gives , so step 1.1 says equals its conjugate and is real.
Depends on
- Self-adjoint and normal endomorphisms of a finite-dimensional real or complex inner product space
- The trace $\operatorname{tr}(A)$ as the sum of the diagonal entries
- In orthonormal bases, the matrix of the adjoint is the conjugate transpose of the matrix
- Adjoints satisfy $(S+T)^*=S^*+T^*$, $(\lambda T)^*=\overline\lambda T^*$, $(ST)^*=T^*S^*$, and $T^{**}=T$
- For $A\in M_{m\times n}(F)$ and $B\in M_{n\times m}(F)$, $\operatorname{tr}(AB)=\operatorname{tr}(BA)$

17 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
