How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Reduced Hadamard words and their exact denominators

Statement

Use G={H,T,T†,S,S†,X,Y,Z} and allow scalar phases ωqI. Only H contributes to the H count; only T,T† contribute to the T count. Every word can be rewritten, with its exact scalar retained, as

ωqTaHTb1H⋯HTbh−1HTcXe,

where all bi are odd, exponents are read modulo 8, and e∈{0,1}. For h=0 interpret this as ωqTaXe. The rewriting never increases either resource count. Each odd power uses one T gate and even powers use none. A reduced word with h≥2 has sde⁡(∣U00∣2)=h+1; with h=1 the exponent is 2, and with h=0 the squared entry is 0 or 1. Consequently reduced words minimize H count among all words for the same matrix up to global phase.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The exact matrices of G, S=T2, and the ring O=Z[ω].

[F1]

Clifford+T gate library and exact matrices supplies the matrices and ω4=−1.

[F2]

Smallest square root of two denominator exponent defines the least exponent placing an element in O.

Replace Y by iXZ, and move all X factors to the right using XTr=ωrT−rX and XH=HZ. Combine adjacent diagonal powers. For an even interior exponent, use H2=I, HT4H=X, HT2H=ωT−2HT−2, or HT6H=ω−1T2HT2. Each replacement strictly decreases the H count and introduces only free diagonal Clifford or Pauli factors. Repeat until all interior exponents are odd. Combining powers never increases the number of odd powers, since the parity of a sum is at most the sum of the parities. Thus both counts never increase. Exact scalar exponents are updated modulo 8. A stack of diagonal blocks and H symbols implements this reduction in linear time in the input word length: each interior even-block replacement removes at least one H symbol and requires only bounded local stack updates.

1.2F1algebra

For a unit column (u,v)T, set x=2Re⁡(uˉv), y=2Im⁡(uˉv), z=∣u∣2−∣v∣2. Direct matrix multiplication gives the H action (x,y,z)↦(z,−y,x) and the Tr action (x,y,z)↦(xcos⁡(rπ/4)−ysin⁡(rπ/4),xsin⁡(rπ/4)+ycos⁡(rπ/4),z). For odd r, its sine and cosine are independently signed 1/2. The rightmost TcXe starts the column at (0,0,(−1)e), and the leftmost Ta does not change the final z.

Ignore these endpoint factors temporarily. After one H the triple is (±1,0,0). After two H gates with an odd intervening power it is (0,±1/2,±1/2). After three it has x=±1/2, y=±1/2, z=±1/2, so the respective least exponents are 1,2,2. If two nonzero elements have unequal least exponents, their sum and difference have exponent equal to the larger one: scale by that larger power; one summand is primitive modulo 2O and the other is divisible by 2, so their sum cannot be divisible. Inductively, after h≥3 H gates the exponents of (x,y,z) are (h−2,h−1,h−1). Indeed an odd rotation makes both new transverse coordinates have exponent h, and H makes the new exponents (h−1,h,h). The same transition from the displayed two-H triple establishes the induction base.

Since ∣u∣2=(1+z)/2, the positive exponent h−1 of z for h≥2 gives exponent h+1 for ∣u∣2 by the same primitive-numerator argument. For one H, z=0 and ∣u∣2=1/2 has exponent 2; for zero H the column is a basis vector. Thus the squared-entry exponent distinguishes every possible reduced H count, including 0,1. Any competing word reduces by step 1.1 without increasing H count, and its squared-entry exponent is unchanged by scalar phase. Its reduced H count therefore equals that of the given reduced word. This proves H minimality.
