How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
DLOGTIME uniform iterated addition threshold circuits
Statement
For , the exact sum of nonnegative -bit integers has constant-depth polynomial-size circuits over AND, OR, NOT and MAJ, with output bits. The circuits are DLOGTIME-uniform under the following explicit array convention: the input bit has tuple address ; array dimensions and gate-coordinate domains may be padded to powers of two, with padded inputs zero. Gate addresses use a fixed number of binary coordinate fields, and the uniformity machine receives the binary dimensions and gate addresses. Equivalently, the input is a bit matrix with both dimensions padded to powers of two. Constants and output truncation are included in the family. The claim does not apply to arbitrary effectively decodable encodings.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: , the bit array in the Statement, and random-access Turing-machine DLOGTIME uniformity. All logarithms in the proof are base two.
Proof
Two-word addition has the following constant-depth Boolean construction. For -bit words , put and . The carry entering bit is A carry is generated by two ones, propagated through positions with at least one one, and killed by two zeros; this proves the formula. The output bit is the XOR of , computed by its constant-size Boolean truth table, with the final carry appended. These formulas have constant depth and polynomial size, and predecessor tests use equality and order on their bit-position addresses.
For , let , let be the least power of two at least , and put . Then . Split each input into consecutive -bit blocks and pad the last block with zeros. For block , define Its upper bound is , polynomial in .
To compute all bits of , pad the row domain to a power of two with . Create a rectangular set of distinct copy gates with , , and . Gates with or are zero; otherwise they copy . There are slots, a power of two polynomial in , and exactly slots are true. For each , feed these slots and distinct constant slots to a MAJ gate, with exactly constant slots equal to one. Its odd fan-in is , so under either convention for majority it tests , equivalently . Write this output as and set , . Then tests , and bit of is the OR of over the indices having bit equal to one. The depth is constant and the size polynomial.
Write . Since and , form two words: has block equal to , and has block equal to and block zero zero. These bits are direct selections from the bits computed in step 2.1. The blocks do not overlap within either word, and Apply step 1.1 once to . This is a constant number of constant-depth stages of polynomial total size.
We verify uniformity explicitly. Use fixed-length tuples with a constant number of -bit fields for gate type, block, row, within-block bit, copy, threshold, output-bit and constant-slot indices. All predecessor predicates in step 1.1 and step 1.2 and step 2.1 and step 3.1 use equality, order, the bit predicate on , , the constant-slot test , and . Since is a power of two, the last relation is a shift and concatenation. The exponent of the power of two is the sum of the corresponding bit-length exponents. Testing compares with the highest nonzero bit position of . Determine the field widths and from the binary dimensions and perform these tests by a constant number of linear scans, additions, subtractions, shifts and comparisons of -bit words. Each gate-type or predecessor query takes time on the random-access uniformity machine; no general multiplication of two varying address fields is used. Dimensions and coordinate domains are padded to powers of two, and positions outside the actual input bounds are constant zero. For , copy the input word. Finally , so the retained output width is exactly the one in the Statement.
