How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Singular values are Lipschitz in the spectral norm

Statement

Let A,E∈Fm×n, where F=R or C, and put p=min⁡(m,n). Then for every 1≤i≤p, ∣σi(A+E)−σi(A)∣≤∥E∥2.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: Matrices A,E∈Fm×n and 1≤i≤p.

[F1]

The best rank-at-most-k approximation in operator norm is the rank-k truncation of a singular value decomposition: σi(A) is the minimum of ∥A−Z∥2 over matrices Z of rank at most i−1; the same holds for A+E.

[F2]

The operator norm is zero on the zero domain and otherwise is max_{||v||=1} ||Tv||: the spectral norm is a norm and satisfies the triangle inequality.

Proof

1.1F1F2choose

Choose a rank-at-most-(i−1) SVD truncation Ai−1 of A. By [F1] and [F2], σi(A+E)≤∥A+E−Ai−1∥2≤∥A−Ai−1∥2+∥E∥2=σi(A)+∥E∥2.

2.1step 1.1algebra∎

Apply step 1.1 with A+E in place of A and −E in place of E. This gives σi(A)≤σi(A+E)+∥E∥2. The two one-sided inequalities give the stated absolute-value bound.

7 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
