How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The integral two-letter Temperley–Lieb representation has a linear left inverse
Statement
Put and . For a commutative -algebra , let be the free -module on binary words of length , with . The cup and cap maps are
Insertion of these maps in adjacent positions defines a representation
Over this map has an -linear left inverse, and the same left inverse works after every base change to . In particular, it is injective over every such . It preserves the number of ones, and on the local ordered basis the generator has zero blocks and middle block
Horizontal reflection of an endomorphism diagram is represented by matrix transpose.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The diagram modules and stacking convention with loop value .
Diagram modules are free on noncrossing boundary pairings, composition removes each closed component with one factor , and juxtaposition is strict monoidal (Temperley–Lieb planar diagram data and endomorphism modules, Stacking is associative and horizontal juxtaposition is strict monoidal).
Elementary cup-cap diagrams generate every endomorphism diagram (Elementary cup-cap diagrams generate every finite planar pairing endomorphism diagram).
A free module has its coefficient-coordinate maps in its designated basis (The free module on a set and its standard basis).
Proof
Given: , , the word bases, and the explicitly specified maps .
Direct substitution on gives , while . Here a tensor notation means insertion of the displayed local map, with all other word letters unchanged. Decompose a noncrossing pairing into local cups, caps and straight segments. Successively eliminating an adjacent opposite pair of bends uses one of the two identity formulas; eliminating a closed component uses . Thus the map associated to a pairing is independent of its decomposition, and stacking corresponds to map composition: every exterior path straightens by these identities and each interior cycle contributes , exactly as in [F1]. This constructs .
On two letters the cup-cap composite is ; applying it to and gives respectively and , and it kills . This proves the matrix formula and preservation of the number of ones. Its matrix is symmetric. Reflecting reverses products and fixes each generator, so [F2] implies for all .
Bend the input boundary points of an endomorphism pairing around the left side, reversing their order. This is a bijection from its diagram basis to noncrossing cup matchings on ordered points. On word-space maps the same bending is a linear isomorphism : the cap pairing on has matrix with unit determinant, and repeated use of its inverse cup, with reversed word order on the bent side, gives the two inverse bending maps. The identities in step 1.1 verify that bending a diagram's matrix gives precisely its cup vector. No loop is introduced by bending.
For a cup matching , form the word with at each left cup endpoint and at each right endpoint. Every prefix has at least as many ones as zeros, and the full word is balanced. These words determine their matchings uniquely: pair each zero to the most recent unmatched one; any other pairing would cross an intervening pair. The cup vector of has coefficient at : choose the term in every cup. Every other term is lexicographically smaller, with , because the first cup whose orientation changes has its left endpoint changed from to . Its other factors are powers of the unit . This argument uses only the endpoint matching, and applies to nested and disjoint cups alike.
Order the matchings by , and restrict their cup vectors to the coefficient coordinates indexed by the same words . The resulting square matrix is triangular with every diagonal entry , so its inverse has entries in : subtract successive earlier rows, or use the finite sum for its strictly triangular part . Composing coefficient restriction, this inverse and the inverse basis identification gives an -linear left inverse on cup vectors. Composing with bending in step 2.2 gives an -linear left inverse to . All its matrix identities remain identities after base change, so the same construction is a left inverse over and proves injectivity there. At the empty matching and empty word give the one-by-one matrix , so the same conclusion applies.
