How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Low-degree exact sequences for Yoneda Ext in both variables
Statement
For a short exact sequence and an object in an abelian category, the sequence is exact at every term before the final term. The boundary pulls back the given extension along a map ; splices it with a short extension of by . The dual sequence in the first Ext variable is exact at the corresponding terms:
Here exactness means that the image at each asserted term equals the preimage of the zero class. This interpretation is valid even when a Yoneda class collection is a proper class. When the displayed class collections are sets, equip them with the Baer operations; the displayed sequences are then exact sequences of abelian groups.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The displayed short exact sequence and object , with no projective, injective, or choice assumption.
Pullback and pushout are the exact constructions of Pullback and pushout of an extension. An endpoint-fixed map of short exact sequences is invertible by its zero kernel and cokernel in Abelian category.
Baer addition and zero are as in The Baer sum of extension classes and Baer sum makes extension classes an abelian group.
A splice is zero exactly when lifts to an extension by (A zero Yoneda splice factors through the middle object).
Proof
Every displayed map has the asserted direction: Hom uses composition; the two maps between short extension classes are and ; ; and . Universal properties send endpoint-fixed maps to endpoint-fixed maps, so pullback, pushout, and splicing respect the generated equivalence relation. These constructions commute with finite direct sums. Pullbacks and pushouts in independent endpoints commute, as is seen by their common universal property. Consequently the maps between short extension classes preserve Baer addition.
Exactness at the first three Hom terms follows from the kernel property of and the cokernel property of : a morphism is killed by exactly when it factors uniquely through . At , a map belongs to exactly when splits. A section of that pullback is exactly a map satisfying . Thus .
The connecting maps are additive as well. For , form the pullback of along and then push out along . Addition induces an endpoint-fixed map from this short extension to , proving . For the other connecting map, use the two-fold Baer construction: direct sum, diagonal pullback at , codiagonal pushout at . Write , whose kernel is . Then . Put , with pullback along . The map induced by and induces an isomorphism of extensions of by . Finally the defining pushout map and pullback map give an endpoint-fixed chain map between their splices. These explicit maps identify the two-fold Baer representative of with . Thus preserves addition wherever the extension-class collections are sets; the same formulas hold on classes.
Let . If splits, its middle pushout admits a retraction to its subobject . Composing with this retraction gives with . Hence factors uniquely through as . The pair gives an endpoint-fixed map , so . Conversely splits: on its pushout , the two identity maps to induce a retraction onto the first copy of . Pulling back along shows . This proves exactness at .
Let and suppose splits. A retraction from its middle pushout to , composed with 's pushout map, yields satisfying . Let . The kernel of is , and is epic. For the last assertion without elements, if satisfies , then factors through , since is epic and . Write ; restricting to gives , so and then . Thus the cokernel of is zero. The resulting extension pushes out along to : the map induced by and the inclusion of is an endpoint-fixed short-extension isomorphism. Conversely for every by , since pushout along the zero map is split. Therefore exactness holds at .
At , [F3] states precisely that if and only if lies in the image of . This proves every asserted exactness in the covariant sequence, with no assertion of surjectivity onto the final term.
The opposite of an abelian category is abelian: kernels and cokernels interchange, biproducts remain biproducts, and the coimage-image isomorphism dualizes. Reversing all arrows therefore identifies its short and two-fold extensions, endpoint-fixed zigzags, pullbacks, pushouts, and Baer operations with the corresponding dual constructions in the original category. Apply steps 1.1–3.1 in that opposite category to and . The resulting covariant sequence is exactly the second displayed sequence; its first connecting map pushes out along , and its last connecting map splices an extension of by on the left of . This proves all its asserted exactness.
Remarks
The assertion is a representative-level image-equals-kernel statement in every abelian category. Where Yoneda extension classes form sets, these are the usual exact sequences of abelian groups. No implicit set-smallness theorem for arbitrary abelian categories, and no identification with derived Ext, is needed for the proof.
