How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

The scaled KKT residual vanishes exactly at KKT tuples

Statement

For the program of Inequality constrained programs, tangent cones, constraint qualifications, and KKT and the residual of Scaled KKT residual and convex normal cone, rKKT(x,ν,λ)=0 if and only if (x,ν,λ) satisfies every KKT condition.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The residual definition and KKT system for the stated C2 program.

[F1]

The residual is the sum of the Euclidean norms of the stationarity, equality-feasibility, positive-inequality, negative-multiplier, and complementarity vectors (Scaled KKT residual and convex normal cone).

[F2]

The KKT system consists of stationarity, equality and inequality feasibility, nonnegative inequality multipliers, and componentwise complementarity (Inequality constrained programs, tangent cones, constraint qualifications, and KKT).

Proof

1.1givenF1F2algebra

If the residual is zero, each summand in [F1] is nonnegative and their sum is zero, so each norm is zero. The stationarity and equality terms then give stationarity and h(x)=0. The positive-part term is zero exactly when gi(x)≤0 for every i, and the negative-multiplier term is zero exactly when λi≥0 for every i. The last term gives λigi(x)=0 coordinatewise. These are all conditions in [F2].

2.1givenF1F2algebra∎

Conversely, if the KKT conditions hold, every vector inside each norm in [F1] is zero: feasibility makes h=0 and [g]+=0, dual feasibility makes [−λ]+=0, complementarity makes λ∘g=0, and stationarity makes the first vector zero. Thus the residual is zero.

5 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
