How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A nonzero best polynomial error must alternate at n+2 extrema
Statement
Let with , let , and let . If is a best approximant with , then there are ordered points in and such that
Facts & Assumptions
Given: with , , , and a best approximant with .
Best uniform polynomial error on a compact interval: is the attained uniform error on the compact interval .
A polynomial with the sign pattern of the active extrema: if the active extrema of a continuous residual have no alternating points, a polynomial of degree at most has the same strict sign as that residual on its full active-extrema set.
Sums, scalar multiples, products, absolute values, maxima, minima and quotients with nonvanishing denominator of continuous functions are continuous, as are constants, the identity and every polynomial function and For a nonempty subset of with , compactness, closedness and boundedness, pseudocompactness, and attainment of extrema by every continuous real-valued function are equivalent: polynomial differences are continuous, and continuous real functions attain extrema on compact subsets of .
Proof
Put . It is continuous by [F3] and has norm by [F1]. Since is compact, [F3] makes attain , so its active-extrema set is nonempty. Suppose there are not ordered alternating points in . Applying [F2] gives a polynomial of degree at most with for every . In particular, is nonzero on .
The set is compact because it is a closed subset of . The continuous function therefore has a positive minimum on by [F3]. The set is a relatively open neighborhood of , by continuity and step 1.1.
If is nonempty, it is compact and contains no point of , so [F3] gives . If it is empty, set ; the outside bound is then vacuous.
The polynomial is continuous and has finite norm. Choose with . On , and have the same sign, , and , so . On , when nonempty, . Thus , while , contradicting that is best. Hence the required alternating extrema exist.
