How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Channel Diamond Norm One
Statement
Every quantum channel between nonzero finite-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces has .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: Nonzero finite-dimensional and a completely positive trace-preserving map .
The diamond norm is the supremum of induced trace norms of finite amplifications, and it may be capped at (Diamond Norm, Diamond Norm Ancilla Dimension Bound). The ancilla-bound carrier is draft.
A channel has a finite Kraus representation and trace preservation gives (Finite-dimensional quantum channel, Kraus and Choi characterizations of complete positivity, Trace preservation is Kraus normalization).
A finite Kraus sum is completely positive, and trace-norm duality is (A finite Kraus sum is completely positive, Trace Norm Duality And Norm Properties).
Ordered tensor registers fix the factor and pairing conventions; tensor maps act factorwise and their adjoints are factorwise, so tensor amplification of the Kraus formula has Kraus operators (Ordered tensor registers, their inner product, and wire permutations, Tensor products of finitely many linear maps, Tensor maps preserve composition, identities, and adjoints, [L2]).
Products of operator matrix units form a basis for the full operator space on a tensor product, so the factorwise Kraus expansion checked on these matrix units determines the amplified map for every operator (Tensor products of operator matrix units form a basis).
For a nonnegative operator , its singular values are its nonnegative eigenvalues, so (Trace Norm, Every linear map between finite-dimensional real or complex inner product spaces admits a singular value decomposition, A non-negative operator is equivalently self-adjoint with nonnegative eigenvalues, a positive semidefinite matrix in an orthonormal basis, or an operator of the form S^*S).
The operator norm is , and the trace pairing is cyclic for finite-dimensional rectangular maps (The operator norm is zero on the zero domain and otherwise is max_{||v||=1} ||Tv||, For and , ).
Cauchy–Schwarz gives (Cauchy–Schwarz: , with equality exactly for dependent pairs).
For a unit vector , is a rank-one orthogonal projection and is a density operator (Dirac Notation Conversion, Ray-to-projector is well-defined and bijective, Density operator).
Proof
By [L1], it suffices to use the ancilla , where . Let . By [L4], its Kraus operators are , and [L6] ensures this factorwise Kraus formula agrees with the amplification on every operator. Its trace-preserving normalization follows from [L2]. Define . It is completely positive by [L3] and unital because . If , then is nonnegative: for any its quadratic form is at least by [F2]–[F3]. Complete positivity of applied with the two-dimensional auxiliary space preserves this block positivity. For , test the resulting block operator on ; its quadratic form is , so .
For any input operator , the Kraus formula for and cyclicity [F2] give . Trace-norm duality [L3] then gives using step 1.1. Thus the induced norm at ancilla dimension is at most one, and [L1] gives . Conversely choose unit vectors and . The rank-one projector is a density operator by [L5]. The amplified map is completely positive by [L3] and trace-preserving by [L2] and [L4], so is a density operator and has trace norm one by [F1]. Therefore the induced norm at is at least one, and [L1] gives .
