How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Clifford to binary symplectic action is surjective
Statement
For every , write for the group of invertible -linear maps satisfying for all . For every there is a Clifford circuit made from Hadamard gates , phase gates , CNOT, and wire swaps whose induced action on binary Pauli labels is . Since the phase gate satisfies , this group is also generated by , , CNOT, and swaps. Hence the conjugation homomorphism from the Clifford normalizer to is onto. The proof uses finite transvection reduction and exact mod- phase updates at every gate.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: the finite-dimensional binary symplectic space , the Clifford normalizer, and the stated transvection generation and lifting lemmas.
Symplectic transvections generate the binary symplectic group: every symplectic map is a finite product of maps .
Clifford circuits lift binary symplectic transvections: each such transvection has a Clifford circuit lift built from , CNOT, and swaps, with its mod- phases computable gate by gate.
Clifford normalizer: the Clifford normalizer is closed under products.
Binary Pauli quotient isomorphism: binary labels identify the scalar quotient of the Pauli group.
Clifford induces symplectic map: each Clifford has its induced symplectic map, and .
Proof
Let . By [F1], choose a finite factorization , omitting zero vectors if desired. This factorization is obtained by the finite induction in [F1], so no choice axiom is used.
For each factor, take a Clifford circuit from [F2] whose binary action is . The finite product lies in by [F3]. By [F5], its induced symplectic action is . The quotient identification [F4] ensures these are exactly the binary labels of conjugated Paulis. Every constituent gate updates its phase coordinate modulo by the formulas in [F2], so the product is an exact Clifford lift as well as a binary one.
