How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Spencer's quantum-characteristic criterion for Jones–Wenzl existence

Statement

Let K be a field, δ∈K, let ℓ be the quantum characteristic from Temperley–Lieb quantum integers and quantum characteristic, and let p=char⁡K (write p=∞ in characteristic zero). A normalized idempotent e∈TLn(K,δ) satisfying ε(e)=1 and die=0 for every 1≤i<n exists exactly in the following cases:

  1. if ℓ=∞, every finite n satisfies the criterion n<ℓ;
  2. if ℓ<∞ and p is finite, then n<ℓ or n=a p(i)−1 for some i≥1 and integer 1≤a<p;
  3. if ℓ<∞ and p=∞, then n<ℓ or n=aℓ−1 for some positive integer a.

The criterion is over fields. It does not assert descent to an arbitrary coefficient ring.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The field K, its loop parameter, rank n≥0, recurrence quantum characteristic ℓ, and characteristic parameter p in the Statement. Here ε is the augmentation taking the coefficient of the identity diagram, as in the quantum-binomial criterion below.

[F1]

A normalized idempotent annihilated by all di exists over a field exactly when every quantum-binomial polynomial Bn,k(δ), 0≤k≤n, is nonzero; the proof establishes the equivalence over every field and makes no integral-ring descent claim (Jones–Wenzl existence over a field is detected by one quantum-binomial row).

[F2]

Full-row nonvanishing is equivalent to the exact three quantum-characteristic/characteristic branches in the Statement (Nonvanishing of an entire quantum-binomial row and the characteristic digits, with p(i) as in Temperley–Lieb quantum integers and quantum characteristic).

Proof

Given: The data in the Statement.

1.1F1given

By [F1], existence of the normalized annihilating idempotent is equivalent to nonvanishing of every Bn,k(δ). The hypotheses of [F1] are exactly a field, its loop parameter and a nonnegative rank, so this equivalence includes arbitrary positive characteristic and the zero-loop case.

2.1F2step 1.1algebra∎

Apply [F2] to that same field and the recurrence parameter ℓ. It gives every finite rank when ℓ=∞; for finite ℓ and positive characteristic it gives n<ℓ or n=aℓpi−1−1=ap(i)−1 with i≥1 and 1≤a<p; and in characteristic zero it gives n<ℓ or n=aℓ−1 for any positive integer a. These are precisely the three asserted cases, so the equivalence in step 1.1 proves both directions without narrowing any branch.

Remarks

The proof uses an integral diagram representation and an explicit quantum-binomial zero-pattern argument. It does not infer arbitrary-field behavior from the ordinary generic quantum-group centralizer theorem, and does not claim the full Spencer composition-factor classification. The latter is a substantially richer theorem unnecessary for this particular existence criterion. A failed rank-by-rank Jones–Wenzl recursion is not a nonexistence test; for example the characteristic-zero finite-ℓ branch includes n=aℓ−1 even when an earlier recursion denominator vanished.
