How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Negative bulk viscosity violates entropy admissibility
Algebraic counterexample in the Newtonian/Fourier residual family with negative bulk coefficient. This coefficient lies outside the adopted nonnegative-bulk postulate; the example is not a material observation or claim about a realized fluid.
Statement refuted
Let and let be the identity matrix. For set , , and . For , , , , and , define the pointwise Newtonian/Fourier residual Here is the temperature-gradient value; in SI units is in , in , in , in , and in . The false assertion is that for every such whenever , independently of the value of .

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The Newtonian/Fourier residual formula and coefficient test, with the algebraic coefficient family extended to values outside the adopted physical coefficient range.
Continuum entropy residual and Newtonian admissibility: for the smooth balance/state hypotheses and the closure , the residual is . Its exact algebraic test says nonnegativity for every independent requires and . This is the parent theorem’s explicitly qualified algebraic coefficient-family test; the negative witness lies outside the separately adopted nonnegative-bulk physical subfamily.
The negative- coefficient choice below is a pointwise algebraic extension of the closure. It is excluded by the adopted post-fd-newtonian-fourier sign postulate and is not asserted to describe a measured material.
Counterexample
Given: Fix a local state with , choose and , set , choose any , and let and . Define if the stress is written .
The trace is , so . By [L1], the residual for these data is .
Since , , and , one has . Thus a positive shear coefficient alone does not guarantee entropy admissibility for compressible strain. This is a coefficient counterexample outside the adopted sign range, not an observation about nature.
