How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A prescribed covariant stress-energy tensor need not be conserved
Statement refuted
Every symmetric type- tensor field of the form , with a real function on a nonempty connected open chart domain of the affine Minkowski model, is locally conserved on ; in particular, writing a prescribed stress-energy tensor in the manifestly covariant form in every inertial chart would force its local conservation.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The affine Minkowski model with an inertial chart and coordinate partial derivatives , an inertial orthonormal frame with and constant in the chart (Oriented time-oriented affine Minkowski space (the spacetime primitives), Lorentz forms of inertia (3,1,0) on a 4-dimensional real vector space, Inertial frames and inertial charts of the affine Minkowski model, Directional derivatives and partial derivatives of a map ), a nonempty connected open , and of class (C^k tensor fields on affine Minkowski space and their inertial components).
Force density and conservation terminology: for a symmetric type- field , the four-force density is the vector field with components , and is locally conserved on exactly when on . (Stress-energy tensor, force density and local balance on flat spacetime)
A function with continuous partial derivatives on an open set is totally differentiable there. (If all partial derivatives exist on a neighbourhood and are continuous at a point, then the map is totally differentiable there with Jacobian derivative)
On a nonempty connected open subset of , a totally differentiable map has identically zero derivative if and only if it is constant. (A differentiable map on a connected open Euclidean set has zero derivative exactly when it is constant)
Derivative rules: constant multiples of differentiable functions are differentiable with the constant pulled out. (Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: , , , and when )
Counterexample
Force density of . Since the components are constant in the inertial chart, differentiating componentwise by [F4] gives . Because the matrix is invertible (it is the inverse of the nondegenerate form ), on if and only if for every .
Conservation forces constancy. By [F2] the function is totally differentiable, with derivative the covector of its partial derivatives; if , step 1.1 gives , and [F3] gives that is constant on the connected open set ; conversely a constant has by step 1.1. Hence is conserved exactly for constant , and for nonconstant the continuous force density , with the components computed in step 1.1, is not identically zero although it may vanish at points.
Explicit witness. On (identified with an inertial chart) take , which is smooth and nonconstant. Then and , so : it vanishes exactly on the hyperplane and is nonzero at every point off that hyperplane. Thus the prescribed field has nonzero force density on a nonempty open subset of , so it is not locally conserved, although vanishes at some points.
Covariance does not imply conservation. Under an inertial transition with a proper orthochronous Lorentz matrix (Inertial frames and inertial charts of the affine Minkowski model), the components of the same tensor transform by the rank-two law (Transformation of tensor, covector, derivative and current components under affine Lorentz maps,(iii)); writing for the scalar, one gets , because for a Lorentz matrix. So the expression is manifestly covariant; yet by step 2.1 its local conservation is equivalent to constancy of the scalar , which covariance does not require.
The field of step 2.2 is a symmetric type- field of the form on the connected open set that is not locally conserved, refuting the statement. The example shows that covariance of a prescribed tensor expression and conservation of that tensor are independent properties: conservation is an additional premise. The prescribed field is not claimed to be the stress-energy tensor of any matter model of this page and no choice principle is used.
