How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The norm is the supremum of pairings against unit functions
Statement
Let be a measure space, let , and let be conjugate to . Assume either , or and is sigma-finite. Then for every ,
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A measure space , an exponent with conjugate exponent , and an element .
Apply Hölder's inequality to the real nonnegative functions and , then use . This gives for complex or real functions and conjugate exponents, including , (Holder's inequality for integrals, including the endpoint cases).
Proof
For every with , [L1] gives Therefore the supremum is at most .
If , the displayed formula is immediate. Hence assume from now on . For a measurable representative of , define its conjugate phase by Then and pointwise.
Assume and choose a representative of . Define Since , so . Also gives Hence the supremum is at least .
Assume and choose a representative of . Put . Then with , and So the supremum is at least .
Step 1.1 gives the upper bound, while step 2.1 or step 2.2 gives an function of norm at most one attaining it. Therefore the displayed supremum equals .
