How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Finite-real supremum and infimum domain
Definition
Use the real ordered field of The real numbers and Complete ordered field (least-upper-bound property). For a nonempty set bounded above, denotes the unique real upper bound such that for every upper bound . Existence is the least-upper-bound property established for these reals by The reals are complete; if both satisfy it, and imply equality. The notation is restricted to this domain.
For nonempty bounded below, use Greatest lower bound (infimum) and Every nonempty set bounded below has an infimum: , where . Indeed a lower bound for gives the upper bound for ; negating its least upper bound gives a lower bound for greater than every other one.
Neither nor is defined in : every real is an upper and lower bound, with no least upper or greatest lower bound. If another construction stipulates the value zero for an empty path family, that stipulation is a separate total definition, not . Infinite values require an explicitly specified extended ordered set; no extended-real field operations are introduced here.
