How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Smooth matter quantities, current and observer observables
Framework-local SI definitions of smooth matter fields, selected dust and perfect-fluid stress/current closures, and observer contractions in the equation-based Einstein–Maxwell model. It makes no empirical claim and supplies no general matter closure or coupled-field existence result.
Definition
Let be an open subset of the smooth, oriented, time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifold of Einstein–Maxwell primitive quantities and SI conventions, with signature and metric-selected Levi–Civita connection . The exact tensor types, formal matter systems, stress convention, observer conventions and smoothness levels below are those of Smooth formal matter, EM tensors and observer quantities. Use SI units with length coordinates as in Einstein–Maxwell primitive quantities and SI conventions; no numerical value of the experimentally determined is treated as exact.
At a point , an observer is a future-directed unit timelike vector satisfying . A smooth field of such vectors is an observer congruence. A local tetrad on an open set is a tuple of smooth vector fields forming a basis of at every and satisfying , where , as in Einstein–Maxwell primitive quantities and SI conventions; its value at a point is an orthonormal tangent-space basis. An observer, a congruence, a tetrad and a coordinate chart are different objects. A four-velocity field is a future-timelike vector field with ; is its unit observer at each point. A proper-time worldline segment is a future-directed timelike curve on an interval of proper time in seconds, with and along the segment. These are local model fields and curves; no global flow or completeness is included.
The matter variables are constitutive inputs of a selected model: rest-mass density in , rest-charge density in , rest-energy density in , and isotropic pressure in . A smooth matter current has units , and a symmetric matter stress tensor has units in the stated length-coordinate convention. Their physical meanings are fixed only after a constitutive branch is selected:
- For charged dust, and . Here is rest-mass density, not energy density.
- For a perfect fluid, . Its rest-frame entries are . No equation of state is included by this tensor definition.
- An optional conducting-fluid current is , where and is a rest-space conduction-current density in . The separate constitutive choice uses a scalar conductivity in and is not part of the general definition.
For a smooth real electromagnetic two-form and positive , define the electromagnetic stress by
The components of in an orthonormal tetrad have tesla units. For an observer , the observer electric field is in ; with , write . The observer magnetic field is the spatial covector in tesla, with the orientation and Hodge convention of Einstein–Maxwell primitive quantities and SI conventions. These observer fields depend on ; they are not global observer-independent three-vectors.
Define the matter-plus-field force density by , in , and the matter exchange equation by . This equation is a condition of a selected coupled model, not a consequence of the tensor definitions alone. For any unit observer , define the measured energy density of a symmetric stress tensor by in . Define its spatial energy-current vector by , where projects to ; its orthonormal-frame physical energy flux is in . These contractions are derived, observer-dependent quantities.
Within the selected Einstein–Maxwell formulation, the fields and may be dynamical unknowns in a coupled branch or prescribed data in a test branch. The matter variables and any chosen conductivity or equation of state are independent constitutive input. The current, stress, force density, electromagnetic stress, observer fields and observer contractions are derived from those inputs by the displayed definitions. This definition makes no identification with Newtonian or thermodynamic quantities solely because units agree; it records no measurement and asserts no matter evolution, entropy law, or coupled Einstein–Maxwell solution.
