How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

External product in complex K-theory

Definition

For compact Hausdorff spaces X and Y, define the external product by

a⊠b=pr⁡X∗(a) pr⁡Y∗(b)∈K0(X×Y).

Equivalently, [E]⊠[F] is represented by pr⁡X∗E⊗pr⁡Y∗F. Pullback, distributivity, and the ring structure make this a choice-free bilinear map

K0(X)⊗K0(Y)⟶K0(X×Y)

that satisfies (a⊠b)(a′⊠b′)=aa′⊠bb′.

Assume AC for the reduced clause. If X and Y are based and well-pointed, and a∈K~0(X) and b∈K~0(Y), then a⊠b restricts to zero on X∨Y. Exactness for

X∨Y⟶X×Y⟶X∧Y

therefore supplies a class in K~0(X∧Y) whose pullback is a⊠b. It is unique: restriction to the wedge is surjective because the two projections extend any pair of reduced classes on its two summands, and the same projection argument after one reduced suspension makes K~0(Σ(X×Y))⟶K~0(Σ(X∨Y)) surjective. In the bi-infinite exact sequence this kills the connecting homomorphism preceding quotient pullback, so quotient pullback is injective. This unique class is also denoted a⊠b and is the reduced external product.
