How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The oriented volume form epsilon and the permutation symbols of an inertial frame
Definition
Let be an oriented time-oriented affine Minkowski space and let be an inertial frame with its inertial chart (Inertial frames and inertial charts of the affine Minkowski model). Every has a unique coordinate vector with . For an ordered -tuple of vectors of let
be the real matrix whose -th column lists the coordinates of in the ordered basis , and define
by the determinant of a square matrix (For , the determinant over a commutative ring by the Leibniz formula, and for a real matrix). Then is an alternating -linear form on (Alternating -linear maps): the determinant is multilinear and alternating in the columns, so replacing one by replaces the -th column correspondingly and is linear in each argument, and whenever two arguments coincide, since then two columns coincide (The determinant is the unique normalized alternating multilinear function on the columns). The form is the oriented volume form of the model. Its well-definedness as a form of the model, independent of the inertial frame used in the display, is proved in The oriented volume form is independent of the positively oriented inertial frame ↗.
Components. Write for the components of in the inertial frame. Evaluating the determinant on the coordinate matrix of , which is the permutation matrix of the tuple, gives
and whenever two of the indices coincide; these are the permutation symbols of the frame. Indeed the coordinate vector of is the -th standard basis vector, so the coordinate matrix of is the permutation matrix of the tuple and its determinant is on the identity tuple, the sign of the permutation otherwise, and when two indices repeat.
Raised components. The inverse metric is the inverse of the matrix , which exists because is nondegenerate (Lorentz forms of inertia (3,1,0) on a 4-dimensional real vector space); it is again . The raised components of the volume form are
(summation over repeated primed indices). Since the inverse metric is diagonal with diagonal entries , only one term contributes to and
Spatial symbol. The spatial permutation symbol for is defined by together with alternation in the three indices; explicitly for even permutations of , for odd permutations, and whenever two of coincide.
