How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Local BRST Cohomology Modulo Total Derivatives

Definition

Let n≥1, let U⊆Rn be nonempty and open, let FU be the finite-jet local algebra with nilpotent BRST derivation s and commuting total derivatives Dμ, and let dx1,…,dxn be anticommuting coordinate one-forms. For g∈Z and 0≤p≤n, let AUg,p be the space of local horizontal p-forms of ghost number g, namely finite sums of dxμ1∧⋯∧dxμp with coefficients in the ghost-number-g part of FU. Define the horizontal differential dH:=dxμDμ; its square is dH2a=dxμ∧dxνDμDνa=12dxμ∧dxν[Dμ,Dν]a=0. Extend s to horizontal forms by s(dxμ∧a)=−dxμ∧sa. Since sDμ=Dμs, one has s(dHa)=−dxμ∧Dμ(sa)=−dH(sa), hence sdH+dHs=0.

For p=0, set AUg,−1={0}. The local BRST cohomology modulo total derivatives in bidegree (g,p) is

Hg,p(s∣dH):={a∈AUg,p:there is b∈AUg+1,p−1 with sa+dHb=0}{sm+dHn:m∈AUg−1,p, n∈AUg,p−1}.

The denominator is a subspace of the numerator: for a=sm+dHn, choose b=sn and compute sa+dHb=s2m+sdHn+dHsn=0. For p=0, n=b=0 and the same verification reduces to s2m=0. This is cohomology of the specified local jet algebra and horizontal differential; it is not cohomology of a physical state space or Hilbert space. Interpreting dH-exact top forms as equal local functionals additionally assumes compact support or boundary conditions that make the corresponding surface term vanish.
