How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Specified finite GNS detailed balance
Definition
Let be finite, let with its standard inner product, and write for its matrices. Let be a Hamiltonian in joules, let have units joule-seconds, and let be an integer with a finite family of jump matrices in seconds. Matrices on which the generators act are dimensionless. The Schrödinger generator is the finite GKSL generator of Finite GKSL generators and units.
Its trace-dual observable generator is
Here , , and is the conjugate transpose. The units of , , and are seconds. The generator preserves the identity, , so .
Let be a dimensionless density matrix on , so . Define
This inner product is linear in its first variable. It is positive definite because . The data satisfy the specified finite GNS detailed-balance convention when and is self-adjoint for this inner product, meaning for all . The Hamiltonian part of is kept separate and is anti-self-adjoint. Quantum detailed-balance conventions vary; in particular, this definition does not identify GNS symmetry with KMS or Kubo–Mori symmetry.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The finite GKSL data , a faithful density matrix , and the finite trace.
Finite matrix spectral and state calculus: finite Hermitian matrices have basis-independent spectral calculus; a finite density is positive semidefinite with trace one.
Finite matrix trace cyclicity and nondegeneracy: the finite trace cycles rectangular and square matrix products.
Proof
The square root exists by [F2] and is invertible because . Thus for every nonzero . Linearity in the first variable is immediate, and cyclicity [F3] gives Hermitian symmetry; hence the displayed form is a positive-definite inner product.
For the Hamiltonian term, cyclicity in [F3] gives . Indeed, and is already in the desired input-first order.
For each jump matrix, . The first anticommutator term satisfies by cyclicity, and the second is already . Thus the trace-dual dissipator is exactly the displayed . Substituting cancels term by term, so .
Remarks
The cited Alicki–Lendi convention uses the same dissipative self-adjointness condition with the Hamiltonian part separated. Its inner product is written conjugate-linear in the first variable; swapping the two slots and conjugating gives the first-linear convention used here, without changing self-adjointness. Carlen–Maas explicitly distinguish the GNS inner product from the KMS inner product. No equivalence with another detailed-balance convention is assumed.
