How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Local thermodynamic Legendre potentials
Local C2 single-phase thermodynamic charts in the adopted nonrelativistic SI framework; transformed natural-variable charts are used only where the specified coordinate maps have C1 inverses.
Definition
Fix a material constitution with finite species list and a local energy representation from Local energy representation and thermodynamic conjugates. Here is entropy in , is volume in , each is in , is in joules, and the conjugates are in kelvins, in pascals, and in . The derivatives hold every other listed natural coordinate fixed; the physical-coordinate and rest-frame conventions are those of Equilibrium state domains and SI quantities and unit conventions.
For an open chart, a local Legendre transformation means the following partial transformation of : select one or more of its extensive coordinates , take their conjugate coordinates , and use only a neighborhood on which , with the untransformed coordinates, has a inverse. Such a neighborhood is a valid local transform chart in the sense of Thermodynamic response functions on valid local charts. No inverse or potential as a function of the proposed natural coordinates is asserted outside that chart.
On their respective valid charts define the enthalpy, Helmholtz potential, Gibbs potential, and grand potential by
Their natural-coordinate charts are respectively , , , and . In the volume transform the conjugate coordinate is , which accounts for the plus sign in and ; in the chemical transform the conjugates are , which accounts for the minus signs in . All four potentials have units of joules. A displayed differential or global convex-duality characterization is not part of this definition; critical, coexistence, and other non-C2 boundaries are excluded.
