How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Thermodynamic response functions on valid local charts

Physical scope

Finite response derivatives on smooth positive-temperature simple-compressible charts at fixed composition; no positivity or finite-response claim is made outside the specified charts.

Definition

Fix a constitution c and an open dimensionless subset O⊆Dc in the single-phase region of Equilibrium state domains. Its physical chart is Ω=Φc(O), where Φc is the SI coordinate map defined in Entropic temperature, pressure, and molar chemical potentials. For fixed physical amounts n=(n1,…,nr) with nonempty slice Ωn:={(U,V):(U,V,n)∈Ω}, this slice is open in R2. Use T,p from Entropic temperature, pressure, and molar chemical potentials as functions of the physical coordinates on Ωn. For a response derivative, restrict to an open neighborhood in Ωn where the required natural-coordinate map is a C1 diffeomorphism onto an open image, so its inverse expresses the physical (U,V) as C1 functions of those natural coordinates (Ck Euclidean maps and diffeomorphisms). Specifically, CV uses (U,V)↦(T,V) at fixed n, while Cp, κT, and αp use (U,V)↦(T,p) at fixed n. The existence of each such local chart is a hypothesis for its response derivative, not a consequence of this definition. Each derivative uses the indicated natural variables and holds all other listed coordinates fixed.

The constant-volume heat capacity and constant-pressure heat capacity of the whole system are, where the derivatives exist and are finite,

CV:=(∂U∂T)V,n,H:=U+pV,Cp:=(∂H∂T)p,n.

Here H is the enthalpy in joules; both heat capacities are in J K−1, not per mole. The isothermal compressibility and isobaric thermal expansion coefficient are

κT:=−1V(∂V∂p)T,n,αp:=1V(∂V∂T)p,n.

Since V>0 and the coordinates use SI units (SI quantities and unit conventions), κT has units Pa−1 and αp has units K−1. This definition asserts no sign for any response, no identity among them, and no finite value at a critical or otherwise singular chart.
