How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Macroscopic and microscopic entropy quantities
Definitions of the adopted macroscopic equilibrium entropy and selected finite-model microscopic entropy quantities; no identity between these quantities is asserted without a separately specified equilibrium bridge.
Definition
Fix a material constitution and its equilibrium state domain from Equilibrium state domains. The adopted macroscopic entropy is the finite-valued state function of Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy: for every , is a finite real value measured in under SI quantities and unit conventions. Its argument is an equilibrium macrostate. The definition does not assign to an arbitrary nonequilibrium configuration or to a microscopic trajectory.
For a finite microstate model of Finite statistical microstate model, is finite and nonempty and assigns a finite numerical energy. The model's physical energy is for , with its zero and any retained internal offsets fixed by the declared material model. By The cardinality of a finite set, is the unique natural number equinumerous with , and . Choose an enumeration . A chosen coarse-graining is a finite label set and a function (A function is a relation with and implying ; , the value , domain and codomain). For , let (Subset , proper subset , and the separation notation ). Each is finite: choose a bijection and set . Induction on (The principle of mathematical induction) proves every subset finite. For , ; for , if , then ; if , the set is finite by induction, say via a bijection , and extending by gives a bijection . Thus is finite, and the restriction is a bijection. By The cardinality of a finite set, is therefore defined. Only labels with are admitted here. The Boltzmann macrocell entropy of this specified coarse-graining is
Under this enumeration, a probability vector assigns probability to microstate , where and . Define its Gibbs–Shannon entropy by
with the summand defined to be when . Both expressions have units , because their logarithms are dimensionless and has those units. The finite sum and logarithm have the meanings of Finite sums and finite products, by recursion and The natural logarithm as the inverse of the exponential function.
For a density operator in the declared finite-dimensional sector class of Entropy, the Boltzmann constant and the free-energy functional of the declared finite-sector model, its von Neumann physical entropy is , with the dimensionless entropy defined there. That supplier defines no such quantity for its infinite-dimensional spatial sectors.
These are distinct definitions on different domains: acts on an equilibrium macrostate, on a chosen macrocell, on a specified probability vector, and on a finite-sector density operator. A numerical equality among them requires an additional, explicit identification of model, coarse-graining, preparation and applicable limit. This item supplies no such identification and adopts no canonical or microcanonical sampling rule.
Remarks
The finite microstate model and its numerical-to-physical energy assignment are those of Finite statistical microstate model. That definition supplies neither a sampling rule nor an identification of microscopic entropy with ; any such bridge requires separate assumptions and results.
