How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy

Physical scope

The adopted entropy representation for the declared nonrelativistic, macroscopic, additive bulk thermodynamic systems; smooth derivative conditions apply only on the named single-phase charts.

Postulate

For each admitted material constitution c, the model adopts a finite scalar function

Sc:Dc⟶R with values measured in J K−1,

on the equilibrium state domain Dc of Equilibrium state domains. This framework treats Sc as primitive constitutive data: its existence and form are assumed, not derived from the word entropy, statistical mechanics, or experimental evidence.

On every specified convex region C⊆Dc in the dimensionless coordinates of Equilibrium state domains, Sc is continuous and concave, meaning that for all x,y∈C and every α∈[0,1] (Intervals of R: the nine order-convex forms, nondegeneracy, and length),

Sc((1−α)x+αy)≥(1−α)Sc(x)+αSc(y).

The domain assumptions are local to the material and region named; no unlisted coordinate tuple is presumed physically realizable. The input of Sc is the represented state πc(e); when the function is written using physical coordinates (U,V,n1,…,nr), those coordinates mean the SI values whose dimensionless numerical tuple is πc(e). For independent separated macroscopic systems A,B admitted by Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling, entropy is additive under that postulate's composition map κAB:

SA⊔B(κAB(xA,xB))=SA(xA)+SB(xB).

On each separately designated open, single-phase chart in the physical coordinates (U,V,n1,…,nr), assume the numerical representative of Sc is C2 in the sense of Ck Euclidean maps and diffeomorphisms: its first and second coordinate partial derivatives exist and are continuous. The partial derivative SU at fixed V,n1,…,nr is the ordinary partial derivative in the U coordinate, as in Directional derivatives and partial derivatives of a map U⊆Rm→Rn, and is assumed finite and strictly positive. The numerical chart input uses U^=U/(1 J); consequently SU=(1 J)−1∂Sc/∂U^ and has units K−1. The other physical coordinates are similarly represented using the fixed SI units of SI quantities and unit conventions. No differentiability, strict concavity, or positive SU is asserted outside those charts. This item does not itself define a thermometer calibration or claim a temperature law.

For the tagged bulk family with scaling maps δλ and domains Bc,λ from Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling, also adopt, for every admitted λ>0 and x∈Bc,λ,

Sc(λ)(δλx)=λSc(x).

This is a bulk homogeneity assumption for tagged scaled systems, not exact finite-size scaling for every body. Lieb–Yngvason develop a different accessibility-based route in which entropy is represented from additional operational hypotheses; this framework does not claim that their derivation proves the present primitive entropy postulate.
