How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Diagonal self-adjoint operator model

Definition

Let I be a finite or countably infinite set with a specified enumeration, let Ei∈R, and let ℓ2(I):={x:I→C:∑i∣xi∣2<∞} with inner product ⟨x,y⟩=∑ixiyi‾, linear in the first variable. Write ui for the coordinate unit vector at i. The diagonal multiplication operator HE is the linear operator with domain D(HE):={x∈ℓ2(I):∑i∣Eixi∣2<∞} and action (HEx)i:=Eixi. Completeness and linear domain of the diagonal sequence model ↗ proves completeness of the coefficient space, linearity and density of this domain, and linearity of the coordinate action before the Hilbert-space operator interpretation is used. Its domain is part of the operator data in the sense of Unbounded linear operators: domain, graph and extension.

Scope

The coefficient-space and domain construction above requires no choice assumption. Under Countable Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (ACω)), Diagonal multiplication is self-adjoint ↗ proves that HE equals its Hilbert-space adjoint, including equality of domains; this is the self-adjointness referred to in the title. The choice assumption belongs to the imported adjoint convention used by that lemma.

The definition introduces no claim about a physical Hamiltonian or about a trace of e−βHE.
