How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Period of a smooth one-form along a closed curve
Definition
Let be a smooth -manifold, meaning a topological -manifold equipped with a maximal smooth atlas, and let be a smooth real one-form, meaning a smooth section of the cotangent bundle . Let be a continuous piecewise- curve with : there is a finite subdivision such that on each closed piece a chart contains the curve image, its coordinate representative is on the piece interior, and its derivative extends continuously to the endpoints. At a piece endpoint, use the corresponding one-sided derivative as the tangent. On each piece, pair this tangent with . Define the oriented period by
where is any admissible chartwise subdivision with the regularity specified above. The covector-vector pairing is intrinsic, and additivity makes this value independent of further subdivision. No invariance under homotopy is asserted by this definition.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: A smooth -manifold , a smooth real one-form , and a closed piecewise- curve with the finite chart subdivision and one-sided endpoint derivatives specified in the Definition.
Smooth manifolds and their smooth charts: a smooth -manifold is a topological -manifold equipped with a maximal smooth atlas.
A smooth differential -form: a smooth differential one-form is a smooth section of .
Piecewise c one curve on a manifold: a piecewise- curve is continuous and has a finite chartwise subdivision on which coordinate derivatives extend continuously to the endpoints; those extensions are the one-sided endpoint derivatives, and zero velocities are allowed.
A continuous function on is Riemann integrable, by Heine-Cantor and Riemann's criterion: a continuous real function on a closed bounded interval is Riemann integrable.
For : is integrable on if and only if it is integrable on and on , and then ; with the oriented form for arbitrary : the oriented integral over an interval equals the sum of its integrals over a finite subdivision, including coincident subdivision endpoints.
Proof
The charts are smooth charts of the manifold structure in [F1]. On each chartwise piece, is continuous up to the endpoints by [F2] and [F3]. The covector-vector pairing is unchanged by a chart change, so this is an intrinsically defined continuous real function; its piece integral exists by [F4].
Any two admissible finite subdivisions have a finite common refinement. Repeatedly applying [F5] shows that subdividing a piece leaves the sum unchanged; hence the defined period is a unique real number independent of the chosen subdivision.
