How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Exact elimination of a Gaussian star generates pair couplings
Statement
Assume and let integer . Let have every coordinate equal to , and define the precision matrix on leaf variables and one central variable by
This matrix is positive definite, so it defines a finite centered Gaussian law with precision . Its leaf-to-leaf precision entries are initially zero for distinct leaves. Eliminating the central coordinate exactly gives leaf precision
whose off-diagonal entry is for every pair of distinct leaves. Thus one exact Gaussian block step creates a nonzero pair interaction between every two leaves, even though those pairs had no direct precision entry in the original star.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: , integer , and the matrix in the Statement.
Under , the finite exact block algorithm returns the retained Gaussian precision and normalization after any finite sequence of eliminations (Correctness of finite Gaussian block elimination).
A real symmetric positive-definite precision defines the centered finite Gaussian law with covariance its inverse (Finite Gaussian probability with a positive precision matrix).
Proof
For and , expansion and completion of the scalar square give Expanding the finite sum shows Consequently the remaining part is , which is positive when ; when and , the first square is . Hence is symmetric positive definite and the Gaussian law is defined by [F2].
Use one retained set consisting of the leaves and eliminate the final central coordinate. The eliminated block is , and the cross block is . The algorithm and its correctness theorem [F1] therefore return For , the identity matrix contributes zero and , so the resulting precision entry is . In the original , the leaf block is and its distinct-leaf entries are zero. This verifies the stated generation of all pair couplings.
