How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Exact finite ideal-gas volume fluctuations

Physical scope

Fixed-N ideal gas in the declared dV/V0 isothermal-isobaric preparation with positive external pressure; excludes alternative piston priors and experimental claims.

Example

Let N≥1, d≥1, n=dN, m>0, a0>0, V0>0, T>0 and Pext>0. Use the unit-Lebesgue-volume shape Q1⊂Rd and scaled coordinates y∈Q1N, p∈Rn of Isothermal-isobaric joint preparation, with physical positions qi=V1/dyi. Define the kinetic energy and Hamiltonian by K(p):=∑j=1npj22m,HN(V,y,p):=K(p). In the adopted joint reference dV/V0 times the scaled position-momentum reference, the weight is VNe−β(K+PextV). Its normalization is ΔN=1V0a0n(2πmβ)n/21(βPext)N+1. The volume mean and variance and mean enthalpy are ⟨V⟩=N+1βPext,Var⁡(V)=N+1(βPext)2,⟨K+PextV⟩=n/2+N+1β. The extra one in the finite-N volume factor follows from the stated dV/V0 prior; it is not a universal piston correction.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The ideal-gas Hamiltonian, shape-scaled volume domain, adopted dV/V0 preparation and positive finite parameters.

[A1]

The volume density is proportional to VNe−β(K+PextV) under the adopted preparation (Isothermal-isobaric joint preparation, inherited by Isobaric volume and enthalpy fluctuations).

[A2]

β>0, Pext>0, and the spatial reference shape has unit dimensionless volume; V0 is a fixed positive volume scale. Energy and action units follow Dimensions and SI unit conventions of the non-relativistic classical mechanics framework; temperature and kB follow SI quantities and unit conventions. The adopted preparation fixes V,V0 in md and Pext in J m−d, so PextV is an energy.

[F1]

The Gaussian integral ∫−∞∞e−x2 dx=π gives the unit integral ∫Re−x2dx=π. For a=β/(2m)>0, the linear substitution y=a p gives ∫Re−βp2/(2m)dp=2πm/β; applying it in each of the n momentum coordinates yields (2πm/β)n/2.

[F2]

The isobaric response identities apply under their local moment envelopes (Isobaric volume and enthalpy fluctuations).

Verification

Given: [A1]–[A2] and the Gaussian and isobaric-response facts [F1]–[F2].

1.1A1A2F1algebra

Integrating the momentum factors gives [F1]; integrating the unit shape coordinates gives one, while the configuration scaling contributes VN. Hence ΔN=1N!V0a0n(2πmβ)n/2∫0∞VNe−sVdV,s=βPext>0. Let Ij(s)=∫0∞Vje−sVdV. Direct integration gives I0=1/s; integration by parts, with Vje−sV→0 at infinity and vanishing lower boundary for j≥1, gives Ij=jIj−1/s. Thus Ij=j!/sj+1, and IN=N!/sN+1 cancels the N! in the reference; the displayed finite positive normalizer follows.

2.1A1A2step 1.1algebra

The normalized volume density is VNe−sV/IN(s). Applying the same integral formula to IN+1 and IN+2 gives ⟨V⟩=(N+1)/s and ⟨V2⟩=(N+1)(N+2)/s2. Subtracting the square of the mean gives Var⁡(V)=(N+1)/s2. Since s=βPext, these are the claimed volume moments.

2.2A2F1F2step 1.1algebra

To check [F2], first use fixed sufficient statistics (K,V) with coefficients (−β,−βPext). On a compact positive (β,Pext) set, choose lower bounds β0,P0>0. For K,V≥0, absorbing the quadratic polynomial into half of each exponential gives e−β(K+PextV)(1+K2+V2)≤Ce−β0K/2−β0P0V/2. This is integrable against the full reference νN: the momentum integral is Gaussian by [F1] and the volume integral is IN(β0P0/2)<∞ by step 1.1. At any fixed pressure P∗>0, the statistics (B∗,V)=(K+P∗V,V) satisfy uB∗+vV=uK+(uP∗+v)V. In a small compact neighborhood of (u,v)=(−β,0) both coefficients are bounded strictly below zero; 1+B∗2+V2≤C∗(1+K2+V2) gives the same Gaussian-volume majorant. Thus the exact local exponential envelopes for [F2] hold, including the kinetic-energy factor.

3.1A2F1F2step 2.1step 2.2algebra∎

The momentum factors are independent of V. For a=β/(2m)>0, the boundary term pe−ap2 vanishes at both infinities, and integration of (pe−ap2)′=e−ap2−2ap2e−ap2 gives ∫p2e−ap2dp=(2a)−1∫e−ap2dp. Dividing by the positive Gaussian normalizer [F1] and summing the n components gives ⟨K∣V⟩=n/(2β). Step 2.1 gives Pext⟨V⟩=(N+1)/β; adding the two finite means proves ⟨K+PextV⟩=(n/2+N+1)/β. The envelope check in step 2.2 also licenses the response identities [F2] for this preparation.

Remarks

If Pext=0, the normalization contains ∫0∞VNdV and diverges. If Pext<0, its integrand grows exponentially at large V and also diverges. Thus the positive-pressure condition is essential.
