How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The four electric and magnetic sectors of
Finite algebraic example for and the exact square-torus Pauli-string commutation relation; no general braiding, QFT, or empirical claim.
Example
Assume the Axiom of Choice for the stated lattice prerequisite. Let with . Its finite-group double has exactly four irreducible complex sectors, each one-dimensional: the two conjugacy-class labels (flux labels) paired with the two group characters with and . Here the conjugacy-class label is the magnetic-flux label and the centralizer-representation class is the electric-charge label; these are names for the algebraic labels. In particular, the nontrivial charge character evaluated on the nontrivial flux is , equal to the commutation sign for one crossing of a closed primal string with a closed dual string on the square torus for .

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The group with , the finite-group double classification, and the exact square-torus crossing-string relation.
The Axiom of Choice: every family of nonempty sets has a choice function. This is inherited from the lattice theorem's stated interface; the finite group representation calculation itself uses only finite choices.
Irreducible sectors of the finite-group double: irreducible representations are indexed by conjugacy classes and irreducible representations of the centralizer , with dimension .
Crossing strings and local scalar compression: under [A1], for the square torus with , closed primal and closed dual strings have commutator sign , where is their mod-two edge-crossing number.
Toric-code edge spins on closed-surface cellulations: the square-torus coordinate cycles are chosen with mod-two intersection number .
Verification
The group is abelian, so its two conjugacy classes are the singletons and , and each centralizer is . A group representation is determined by with . The operators and satisfy , , , and by ; they commute with , so their ranges are invariant. Irreducibility forces one range to be all of and the other zero, giving or . A scalar action on a complex vector space of dimension greater than one leaves every line invariant, so irreducibility forces dimension one. Conversely each of these two scalar actions defines a character because . Thus there are exactly the two characters and for each flux label.
By the definition of , its value on the nontrivial flux is .
The coordinate cycles specified in [F3] have . Applying [F2] to their closed strings gives commutation sign , equal to . With no crossings, and the string sign is . The claim is only equality of these finite algebraic signs; it asserts no general braid representation or physical realization.
