How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Water formation at a boundary of the feasible extent interval
Example
For the reaction , let extent and species amounts use moles. The dimensionless stoichiometric column is in the species order , and take . Then the feasible extent interval is , and at the tangent cone permits only forward directions . The matrix of hydrogen and oxygen atom counts annihilates . For the explicitly mathematical objective , the induced extent function is and has a boundary minimum at zero. This is a stoichiometric calculation, not a claim about chemical equilibrium or a measured system.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The reaction vector, initial amounts, extent convention, and linear objective in the Example.
The feasible tangent cone for nonnegative stoichiometric amounts: the feasible tangent cone is determined by nonnegative changes in species whose amounts are zero at the point; the extent derivative is for a differentiable potential.
Verification
The species-amount vector is . Nonnegativity of its third component requires , and nonnegativity of its first two components requires ; hence the feasible set is exactly .
The elemental count matrix is , with first row counting hydrogen atoms and second row oxygen atoms per molecule. Direct multiplication gives , so every change preserves both atom totals.
At , only the water component is zero. Its directional change is , so [L1] gives . A negative direction is infeasible because it would make the water amount negative.
For , the induced function is . Its derivative at is for every feasible tangent , and for every . This verifies the boundary first-order condition and minimum directly for this chosen mathematical objective.
