How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A chart with constant metric components has vanishing metric-selected Christoffel symbols and curvature
Statement
Let be a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model) with metric-selected connection (Metric compatibility, torsion freedom and the metric-selected connection class, Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields), and let be a smooth chart of in which every metric component is a constant function on . Then:
(a) Every Christoffel symbol of in the chart vanishes identically on , (Christoffel symbols of an affine connection).
(b) The curvature tensor of vanishes identically on , (The Riemann curvature operator and the derived Ricci, scalar and Einstein tensors, Tensoriality of the curvature, its coordinate formula and its point-normal metric formula).
(c) Every coordinate curve of the chart is a geodesic of ; that is, for fixed constants the curve is a geodesic in the affine parameter (Coordinate geodesic equation).
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold with metric-selected connection, and a chart with constant metric components.
An affine connection on a smooth manifold is determined by its Christoffel symbols in any chart, which are smooth functions with ; conversely, arbitrary smooth coefficient functions define an affine connection on the chart domain (Affine connection on a smooth manifold, Christoffel symbols of an affine connection).
For a nondegenerate metric the metric-selected connection is the unique affine connection that is torsion-free and metric-compatible; in a chart, torsion freedom is equivalent to and metric compatibility to (Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields clause (b), Torsion freedom and metric compatibility in chart components, Metric compatibility, torsion freedom and the metric-selected connection class).
In a chart, the curvature components of a connection are (Tensoriality of the curvature, its coordinate formula and its point-normal metric formula, The Riemann curvature operator and the derived Ricci, scalar and Einstein tensors).
A smooth curve whose coordinate path satisfies in the chart is a geodesic of the connection, and conversely (Coordinate geodesic equation, Christoffel symbols of an affine connection).
Proof
(The zero-coefficient connection.) On the open submanifold , consider the coordinate connection whose Christoffel symbols in are all zero; this is an affine connection on by [L1]. Its coefficients satisfy , so it is torsion-free; and the compatibility identity of [L2] holds because both sides vanish: the left side is since the metric components are constant, and the right side is a sum of terms each containing a Christoffel symbol. Hence is a torsion-free metric-compatible connection for the restricted metric ; by uniqueness in [L2] it equals the metric-selected connection of , which is the restriction of the metric-selected connection of (its restriction is torsion-free and metric-compatible on ). Therefore every Christoffel symbol of in vanishes on , which is (a).
(The curvature.) Substituting the vanishing coefficients of step 1.1 into the coordinate formula [L3] makes every term vanish identically on , so on for all indices; since the curvature is a tensor field, on . This is (b).
(Coordinate curves.) Let be the coordinate path of a coordinate curve; then and . The right side of the geodesic equation of [L4] vanishes because every vanishes by step 1.1, so the equation holds and the coordinate curve is a geodesic in the affine parameter . This proves (c) and completes the proof.
Remarks
- Hypothesis. The lemma needs the components to be constant on the whole chart domain. Vanishing of the metric components' first derivatives at a single point does not make the Christoffel symbols vanish identically, so no pointwise version is claimed.
- Converse. A chart is not required to be an exponential or normal chart; any chart with constant components qualifies. Conversely the conclusion in a chart forces there by [L2], so locally constant components are equivalent to vanishing Christoffel symbols for the metric-selected connection; the components are constant on each connected component of the chart domain.
