How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Chart independence and the transformation law of a smooth covariant 2-tensor field
Statement
Let be a smooth -manifold and let be a family assigning to each a covariant -tensor at (Smooth covariant 2-tensor fields on a smooth manifold). Suppose that the component functions of are in the charts of one smooth atlas of . Let and be overlapping smooth charts of the maximal smooth atlas and let and denote their coordinate representatives in the charts and as specified in Smooth covariant 2-tensor fields on a smooth manifold. For put and write . Then
where are the entries of the total derivative ; is the label set of the supplier, so in dimension four the sum runs from through . In particular is a smooth covariant -tensor field on : its components are in every chart of the maximal smooth atlas.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A smooth -manifold , a family of covariant -tensors, a smooth atlas in which the components of are , and overlapping smooth charts , of the maximal atlas.
Each coordinate operator is a well-defined derivation at (Coordinate derivations are well-defined derivations).
If is totally differentiable at and at , then is totally differentiable at with (The chain rule for total derivatives: ).
Smoothly compatible charts have smooth transition maps and on the image of the overlap (Smoothly compatible charts and the smoothness of Euclidean transition maps).
Finite sums and products of Euclidean maps are , and composites of composable Euclidean maps are ( Euclidean maps are closed under componentwise algebra and composition).
is a smooth covariant -tensor field exactly when its components in every chart of the maximal atlas are ; its components are given by (Smooth covariant 2-tensor fields on a smooth manifold).
Smoothness of a real-valued function on an open subset of a smooth manifold means that its coordinate representatives are ( and smooth maps between smooth manifolds).
Proof
Let and put . For every smooth function defined near the coordinate derivation is by [L1], and on a neighbourhood of the representative factors as with smooth by [L3]. The chain rule [L2] applied at gives , that is, , where .
Both sides of the identity in step 1.1 act on smooth germs at and are derivations there, so the coordinate vector fields are related by . Evaluating the bilinear form on the pair and using bilinearity together with [L5] gives , which is the displayed transformation law at .
Fix an arbitrary chart of the maximal atlas and a point . Since the supplied smooth atlas covers , there is a chart in that atlas with . On the open overlap , the transition is smooth by [L3], so its first partial derivatives are smooth; each component function is smooth on by the hypothesis and [L6]. The transformation law of step 2.1 expresses each on as a finite sum of products of these derivative functions and . These products and compositions are smooth by [L4]. Thus the components are smooth on a neighbourhood of . Since was arbitrary, they are smooth throughout .
The maximal-atlas chart in step 3.1 was arbitrary, so the components of are in every chart of the maximal atlas whenever they are in the charts of one atlas. Step 2.1 proves the transformation law for every pair of overlapping charts. Thus is a smooth covariant -tensor field by [L5], as claimed.
