How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Harmonic-gauge plane-wave amplitudes split uniquely into a pure plane-wave gauge part and a transverse-traceless representative, with a two-dimensional space of polarizations
Statement
Let be the flat model with its inertial chart and let be a null covector of the flat metric (The flat model spacetime: the Minkowski metric on R^4 and its inertial chart, Plane-wave perturbations of the flat linearization: planar profiles, wave covectors, amplitudes, TT form and the linearized field equations). Let be the real vector space of symmetric matrices (amplitudes), with trace and trace reversal . Define the three linear subspaces

(a) Adapted frames exist. There is a future-directed unit timelike with ; putting and (with the vector metrically dual to ) gives , and , and extends to an -orthonormal basis of with , . In frame components and .
(b) The two subspaces lie in and meet trivially. and ; the map , , is a linear isomorphism, so ; ; and . Consequently and .
(c) Unique TT representative. For every there is exactly one such that is TT; in the frame of (a) with the frame components of , the solution is
Moreover the map , , is linear and satisfies , so the quotient is isomorphic to ; with a screen basis of as in The screen and spatial projectors are orthogonal projections of rank two and three, and the TT projection is the orthogonal projection onto the two-dimensional transverse-traceless space clause (d), the pair is a linear isomorphism .
(d) Differential form of the gauge condition and the gauge transformation. For a single-frequency plane wave with amplitude , the harmonic-gauge condition of Flat linearized perturbations: families, trace reversal, gauge transformation and harmonic gauge clause (d) holds exactly when . If and is as in (c), the covector field satisfies , so that is the plane wave with amplitude and is again in harmonic gauge.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The flat model with inertial chart, a null covector , and the spaces , , defined above.
The flat metric is nondegenerate of signature ; for every null there is a future-directed unit timelike with , and with the stated properties extends to an -orthonormal basis (The flat model spacetime: the Minkowski metric on R^4 and its inertial chart, Every Lorentz form admits an ordered basis with matrix diag(-1,1,1,1), Timelike, null, spacelike and causal vectors of a Lorentz vector space, eta-orthogonality and orthogonal complements in a Lorentz vector space, Rational powers of a positive base).
In an -orthonormal basis , the matrix of the screen projector of the pair is and the TT subspace consists of the symmetric matrices with , and all other components zero; it is two-dimensional, and the map is a linear isomorphism onto (The screen and spatial projectors are orthogonal projections of rank two and three, and the TT projection is the orthogonal projection onto the two-dimensional transverse-traceless space clauses (c)-(d), The wave screen of an observer and propagation direction, and the transverse-traceless projection of a symmetric two-tensor).
A linear map between finite-dimensional real vector spaces is injective exactly when its kernel is trivial; the dimension of an internal direct sum of finitely many subspaces is the sum of their dimensions; a subspace with a spanning set of linearly independent elements has dimension (Linear map between vector spaces over the same field, Kernel and image of a linear map, The kernel and image are linear subspaces, and a linear map is injective if and only if its kernel is trivial, Linear subspace of a vector space, Internal direct sum : the sum is everything and each summand meets the sum of the others only in , If with every finite-dimensional, then is finite-dimensional and ; in particular , Finite-dimensional vector space, and its dimension ; infinite-dimensional means having no finite basis, Vector space over a field).
The chain rule gives for the functions and of Sine and cosine defined by their real power series, whose derivatives are and ; derivatives of sums and products obey the usual rules (The chain rule, in one line from Carathéodory: if is differentiable at and is differentiable at , then is differentiable at with , The derivatives of sine and cosine are cosine and minus sine, Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: , , , and when , Flat linearized perturbations: families, trace reversal, gauge transformation and harmonic gauge clause (c)).
The orthogonal complement of is two-dimensional positive definite and admits an orthonormal basis (The observer rest-space decomposition and the spatial projection, Every finite-dimensional real or complex inner product space has an orthonormal basis, Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event).
Proof
(Existence of the adapted frame.) A vector with and the required properties exists: choose any future unit timelike ; if take ; if , nondegeneracy of and give a vector with , and for small the vector is future timelike and has ; rescaling it to unit length gives by [L1]. Put and , where is the vector with components . Then and , so is a unit spacelike vector orthogonal to ; moreover by construction. By [L5] the pair extends to an -orthonormal basis with , ; in that basis the frame components of the covector are and the raised components are . This proves (a).
(The pure gauge amplitudes.) Let . Its trace is , so ; hence because and . Thus . If , then testing in the frame of step 1.1 on gives ; evaluating on gives , so , and substituting back gives for every , so . Hence is injective, and its image is isomorphic to , so by [L3].
(The TT amplitudes.) If , then , so , and ; in frame components for every . Hence . By [L2], . If with , then testing on as in step 2.1 gives and then , so : .
(Solving for the TT representative.) Let and let be any vector. Define . In frame components with , , the four equations read , that is whose unique solution is the displayed (the matrix of the system is triangular with diagonal entries , all nonzero). Set accordingly; then because is a subspace containing and (steps 2.1, 3.1). We show . First, the harmonic-gauge condition in frame components reads . For this is and , because ; since by construction, . For it gives ; here and , so . For it gives with and , so . Substituting (which holds because ) gives . Therefore , and : .
(Uniqueness and the projection.) If are two TT representatives of the same , their difference lies in by step 3.1 and the definition of ; so the representative is unique. Writing , the assignment is the composition of the linear maps and with the linear solution of step 4.1, hence linear; and for because then solves (uniqueness of the solution). Consequently every is with and , so ; combined with this is an internal direct sum, and by [L3] . The map , , is a linear isomorphism, and by [L2] the map , , is a linear isomorphism. This proves (b) and (c).
(Differential form and the gauge transformation.) For we have and, by [L4], ; this vanishes identically exactly when for every , that is, exactly when . With as in step 4.1 and , the product rule and [L4] give , hence and with , so is in harmonic gauge. This proves (d).
(Conclusion.) Steps 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1 and 6.1 prove the four clauses; the arguments use finite linear algebra in an adapted orthonormal frame and the coordinate calculus of the flat model only. No field equation and no physical assumption enters, and no choice beyond the inherited countable choice of the cited finite-dimensional suppliers is used.
Remarks
-
Frame dependence of the representative. The subspace and hence the pair of a class depend on the chosen observer with ; the quotient and its dimension two do not. Clause (a) records that an adapted observer always exists, and the identity of two classes is tested by their TT representatives in any one admissible frame.

Residual gauge freedom. Harmonic gauge is preserved by the plane-wave gauges of ; that is the plane-wave instance of the residual freedom after harmonic gauge, since for null by [L4]. The lemma states this only in the form needed for the amplitude classification; the existence of a harmonic-gauge representative for a general (non-plane-wave) perturbation is a different statement, proved for the smooth all-space regime in All-space smooth wave equation with zero data, and harmonic gauge on flat space.
