How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

The selective Lueders update by an orthogonal projection

Statement

Assume the Axiom of Countable Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (ACω)). Let H be a nonzero complex Hilbert space (Hilbert space), let P be an orthogonal projection on H (The Hilbert orthogonal projection onto a closed subspace) and let ρ be a density operator with p:=tr⁡(ρP)>0 (Density operators and scalar spectral probability clause (a)). Define the selective update ρP:=PρPp. Then:

(a) PρP is a positive trace-class operator with tr⁡(PρP)=p, so ρP is a density operator;

(b) tr⁡(ρPP)=1 and PρPP=ρP=PρP=ρPP; in particular ρP commutes with P and is fixed by compression with P;

(c) if Q is an orthogonal projection with QP=0, then tr⁡(ρPQ)=0 and QρPQ=0;

(d) if ρ=Tu,u for a unit vector u with Pu≠0, where Tu,ux=⟨x,u⟩u (Rank-one operator calculus), then ρP=TPu,Pu/∥Pu∥2, the pure state of the normalized vector Pu; the value depends only on the ray of Pu, meaning its equivalence class of nonzero vectors under x∼y if y=zx for some z∈C∖{0}.

No physical interpretation of the update is asserted.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: A nonzero complex Hilbert space H; an orthogonal projection P on H; a density operator ρ with p=tr⁡(ρP)>0; an orthogonal projection Q with QP=0; a unit vector u with Pu≠0.

[F1]

Orthogonal projections. An orthogonal projection P on H is a bounded linear operator with P2=P=P∗, ∥P∥≤1 and ⟨Px,y⟩=⟨x,Py⟩ for all x,y∈H (The Hilbert orthogonal projection onto a closed subspace).

[F2]

Density operators. A density operator ρ is self-adjoint, positive and trace class with tr⁡ρ=1, and it admits an expansion ρ=∑nwnTun,un with (un) a finite or countable orthonormal family and weights wn≥0, ∑nwn=1 (Density operators and scalar spectral probability clause (a)).

[F3]

Rank-one calculus. Tu,vx=⟨x,v⟩u is trace class with tr⁡(Tu,v)=⟨u,v⟩ and ∥Tu,v∥1=∥u∥ ∥v∥; for bounded B one has BTu,v=TBu,v and Tu,vB=Tu,B∗v (Rank-one operator calculus clauses (b)-(d)). For any x,y∈H, Tx,x∗=Tx,x and ⟨Tx,xy,y⟩=∣⟨y,x⟩∣2≥0, so Tx,x is positive under the general Hilbert-space definition (Self-adjoint, positive, unitary and normal operators).

[F4]

Trace-class ideal and cyclicity. If T is trace class and B bounded, then BT and TB are trace class with tr⁡(BT)=tr⁡(TB) and tr⁡ linear and trace-norm continuous (Trace class is a two sided Banach operator ideal, Nuclear bounded cyclicity for trace-class operators clause (b)).

[F5]

Positivity of quadratic forms. If S is positive on the Hilbert space H, then ⟨Sx,x⟩≥0 for every x; sums of positive operators are positive, and ρ=Tu,u with ∥u∥=1 is a density operator (Self-adjoint, positive, unitary and normal operators, [F2], [F3]).

Proof

[The unnormalized update] Since P=P∗ and ρ=ρ∗ by [F1] and [F2], (PρP)∗=P∗ρ∗P∗=PρP, so PρP is self-adjoint. For x∈H, ⟨PρPx,x⟩=⟨ρPx,Px⟩≥0 by [F1] and [F5], so PρP≥0. With P bounded and ρ trace class, ρP and then P(ρP)=PρP are trace class by [F4], and tr⁡(PρP)=tr⁡(ρPP)=tr⁡(ρP)=p by cyclicity [F4] and P2=P [F1].

2.1step 1.1F2algebra

[Clause (a)] Since p>0, the operator ρP=PρP/p is self-adjoint and positive with trace p/p=1, hence a density operator by [F2]; this is (a).

2.2step 1.1F1F4algebra

[Clause (b)] By P2=P and cyclicity [F4], tr⁡(ρPP)=tr⁡(PρPP)/p=tr⁡(ρPPP)/p=tr⁡(ρP)/p=1. Moreover PρPP=P(PρP)P/p=PρP/p=ρP and PρP=PPρP/p=ρP=ρPPP=ρPP; thus ρP commutes with P and is fixed by compression with P. This is (b).

2.3step 1.1F4algebra

[Clause (c)] If QP=0 then QρPQ=QPρPQ/p=0 as an operator identity, and tr⁡(ρPQ)=tr⁡(PρPQ)/p=tr⁡(QPρP)/p=0 by cyclicity [F4]. This is (c).

3.1step 1.1F3F4algebra∎

[Clause (d)] Let ρ=Tu,u with ∥u∥=1. By [F3], PρP=PTu,uP=TPu,uP=TPu,Pu, whose trace is ∥Pu∥2>0, and p=tr⁡(Tu,uP)=tr⁡(PTu,u)=⟨Pu,u⟩=∥Pu∥2 by [F3] and cyclicity [F4]; hence ρP=TPu,Pu/∥Pu∥2. For z∈C∖{0} the identity TzPu,zPu=∣z∣2TPu,Pu from the conjugate-linearity of (u,v)↦Tu,v [F3] shows that the state depends only on the ray of Pu. This is (d).
