How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Rapidity parametrization of collinear boosts
Statement
For define , where is the natural logarithm (The natural logarithm as the inverse of the exponential function); the argument is positive because and . Then is a strictly increasing bijection of onto . Writing , and (The real exponential function and the number by a power series), one has , where for real , , , and at . Consequently, fix an inertial frame and a unit spatial vector with coordinate column , . Here and below means of The passive Lorentz boost with parameter beta, so its parameter is a coordinate column, while is a vector of . The passive boost acts, in the ordered pair of directions , as the matrix and as the identity on the perpendicular complement of the plane . Finally, collinear rapidities add: for all , , consistent with Collinear boost composition and the relativistic velocity-addition law.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The real exponential , the natural logarithm, a parameter , and a unit spatial vector with coordinate column , ; .
, , and no logarithm or power enters the definition (The real exponential function and the number by a power series); is continuous and strictly increasing on (The exponential function is strictly increasing) and is a bijection (The exponential is a continuous bijection from onto ).
for all real (The exponential addition formula ).
For , is the unique real with ; thus for all and for all (The natural logarithm as the inverse of the exponential function).
For a positive real base and rational exponents, and (Rational powers of a positive base, Laws of rational exponents); these are the rules used for the power .
For the passive boost acts in the frame's coordinates by and , with ; for one defines and (The passive Lorentz boost with parameter beta).
for a common unit direction and (Collinear boost composition and the relativistic velocity-addition law).
is a proper orthochronous Lorentz map with (The passive boost is a proper orthochronous Lorentz map with inverse B(-beta)).
In an inertial frame, , and on the spatial basis, and the spatial coordinates carry the standard Euclidean structure in which the coordinate column of the unit spatial vector has (Inertial frames and inertial charts of the affine Minkowski model).
Proof
For every real , set . By [L2] with , ; applying [L2] with gives , and because the codomain of is by [L1], so and . Also because by [L1]. Consequently for every , and .
Multiplying numerator and denominator by gives by [L2], since . Since , the numerator is strictly smaller in absolute value than the denominator , so ; thus maps into . For one computes , so is strictly increasing on ; since is strictly increasing by [L1], the composition is strictly increasing on .
Let and put , the denominator being positive. By [L1] there is a real with ; put , so by [L2]. Then step 1.2 gives . Hence is surjective, and with step 1.2 it is a strictly increasing bijection; its inverse is strictly increasing and onto.
For put and . Both lie in , so . Writing , , step 1.2 gives and , while [L2] gives . Hence . This checks the parameter identity of the collinear composition law; the map equality will follow from the boost plane matrices.
For , put and , so . By [L3], . Then step 1.2 gives . Thus ; composing with the bijection of step 2.1 gives , so is a strictly increasing bijection of onto , and in particular for every .
Let and put , so that by step 3.1. By step 1.1, ; since by step 1.1, the rational power laws [L4] give . Multiplying the definition by gives , because by [L5].
Fix and its column , and define for . By [L8], and . Write with , , and ; then . Set and , so and . If , step 4.1 gives , , and [L5] gives . If , [L5] gives and by step 4.1. Thus in both cases the action in directions is , with the identity on the Lorentz-orthogonal complement of their plane, namely .
By [L2] and the exponential definitions, expansion gives and . The product of the two plane matrices from step 5.1 therefore has diagonal entries and off-diagonal entries ; each map is the identity on the same transverse space. The direct-sum decomposition in step 5.1 then gives on all of , including zero rapidities. Together with step 2.2 this proves the collinear composition law stated in [L6], with additive rapidity.
Step 3.1 proves that is a strictly increasing bijection of onto with ; step 1.1 gives ; step 4.1 gives and ; step 5.1 gives the matrix display and the identity on the perpendicular complement; and step 6.1 gives the addition of rapidities. This proves every clause of the statement; the characterisation used implicitly is [L7].
