How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Finite Lorentz oscillator closure
A phenomenological classical Maxwell-Lorentz constitutive model in the material rest frame of the macroscopic electromagnetism framework. It is linear, homogeneous and spatially local, with finitely many electric polarization oscillators and a fixed nondispersive scalar magnetic coefficient. It asserts no microscopic mechanism, material realization or empirical validity; spatial dispersion, nonlinear saturation, moving-media constitutive laws and quantum transitions are outside its scope.
Postulate
Work in a material rest frame: an inertial frame in whose coordinates each modelled material element has fixed spatial position and history , as defined by the framework's earlier material-closure formulation. Let be the material region in that frame and a nonempty open time interval. The electric field , polarization fields , and magnetic fields are real spatial-vector fields in that frame. At every fixed , require and for each , so the displayed time derivatives are classical. These are time-regularity conditions only; this postulate imposes no spatial regularity, which must be stated separately wherever a consuming field-equation result requires it. In SI, is in V m, in C m, in T and in A m.
For a fixed finite integer , adopt at every material point the constitutive equations
Here is a constant scalar with units F m, is a constant scalar with units H m, are constant parameters with units F m s, are constant angular frequencies with units s, and are constant damping rates with units s. The parameters are independent of position and time; this is the meaning of homogeneous in this model. The model is linear because all displayed field and oscillator relations are linear with fixed coefficients, and spatially local because the oscillator equation at uses only the field and oscillator state at that same . The magnetic law has only the constant scalar coefficient and no independent magnetic polarization variable; this is the nonmagnetic oscillator model adopted here.
The word nonmagnetic here means that the oscillator sector has no dynamic magnetic response; the fixed scalar coefficient can still encode a separate static constitutive response. To identify the displayed quantities with the framework's macroscopic definitions, stipulate and . Then and . This is a constitutive identification in the model, not a microscopic decomposition.
At an initial time , the oscillator state consists of and . For a selected causal zero-past branch, choose an onset and require and for every with . Continuity gives , and the equation gives , consistent with the zero extension through onset. For this branch is the retarded initial-value equation with those data, so its value at time uses the applied field only on . If , no decaying stationary impulse response is assumed; in particular, this is not an absolutely integrable convolution for arbitrary bounded histories. This postulate does not assert that any actual material realizes the equations.
