How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Conserving homogeneous BGK idealization

Physical scope

Separately adopted, spatially homogeneous, single-species, monatomic BGK relaxation model with positive translational temperature, constant phenomenological relaxation time, and a dimensionless fast-collision scale. It is not the binary Boltzmann collision operator, an inhomogeneous hydrodynamic limit, a many-particle derivation, or an empirical claim.

Postulate

Adopt Countable Choice ACω as in the BGK definition: for every family (Xj)j∈N of nonempty sets there is a function a with domain N such that a(j)∈Xj for every j∈N.

Let v∗=1 m s−1 and ω3(v)=∑j=03(∣v∣/v∗)j. A velocity density g:R3→[0,∞) is admissible when it is finite-valued and Lebesgue measurable, g d3v is a number density in m−3 (so g has units s3 m−6), and ∫R3ω3(v)g(v) d3v<∞. The primitive parameters are species mass m>0 in kilograms and Boltzmann constant kB>0 in joules per kelvin. For an admissible g with n[g]:=∫R3g d3v>0 and positive centered second moment, define u[g]:=1n[g]∫R3vg(v) d3v,T[g]:=m3kBn[g]∫R3∣v−u[g]∣2g(v) d3v. The domain condition ensures T[g]>0. Define its moment-matched Maxwellian by M[g](v)=n[g](m2πkBT[g])3/2exp⁡(−m∣v−u[g]∣22kBT[g]). It has the same number, momentum, and kinetic-energy moments as g. For a constant relaxation time τ>0 in seconds, adopt the homogeneous collision model QBGK(g)=M[g]−gτ.

Let f0 be an admissible initial density with positive number density and positive centered second moment. For each dimensionless ε>0, a trajectory considered in the accelerated model is a continuously differentiable map fε∈C1 ⁣([0,∞);L1 ⁣(R3,ω3(v) d3v)), whose states have nonnegative admissible representatives with positive number density and positive centered second moment at every t≥0, and whose initial trace satisfies fε(0)=f0 in this weighted L1 space. The derivative is the Banach-space derivative, with the right derivative at t=0. Adopt ddtfε(t)=M[fε(t)]−fε(t)ετ,t≥0, as an equality in L1(R3,ω3(v) d3v) at every t≥0.

The model also permits pointwise solution representatives f~:R3×[0,∞)→[0,∞) that are jointly measurable, have finite ω3-weighted velocity integral at every time, and satisfy f~(v,0)=f0(v) for almost every v. Require their velocity sections to be continuous on [0,∞) and differentiable on (0,∞) for almost every v, with positive number density and centered second moment at every time. In this solution sense, require one full-measure set of velocities on which ∂tf~(v,t)=M[f~(⋅,t)](v)−f~(v,t)ετ holds for every t>0, and require on each compact time interval a velocity-integrable majorant for ω3(v)∣∂tf~(v,t)∣ independent of t. The Banach-space and pointwise equalities specify two solution senses for the same adopted model; neither asserts solution existence. This is a separate phenomenological relaxation model. It does not replace or follow from the binary Boltzmann postulate, and the relaxation-time form is not asserted to be an exact microscopic collision operator. No empirical premise or measured relaxation time is asserted.
