How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Helicity line bundles have nonzero Chern number
Statement
Assume Countable Choice. Let with the subspace topology and six smooth graph charts: for and , the chart on uses the other coordinates in and has inverse . Orient it by the outward unit normal, so an ordered tangent basis is positive exactly when for some real ; in spherical coordinates away from the poles its area form is . In that chart let , , and . For set , a local unit frame of . With Hermitian pairing , define the skew-Hermitian connection form , its curvature , the real Berry connection , and . Then Use the Chern-Weil convention for ; then . The north and south unit gauges and have transition ; the map has degree , since its argument changes by as runs from to . Thus neither helicity line admits a global smooth unit section. This obstruction concerns each line separately and makes no nontriviality claim about the rank-two transverse complex bundle.

The unit sphere is closed and bounded in , hence compact by Heine-Borel; the graph charts in the Statement make it a smooth 2-manifold without boundary. Heine-Borel in : with the Euclidean metric a subset of is compact if and only if it is closed and bounded, and the proof by bisection uses no choice principle; the same holds on the real line
Proof
Given: [A1], [F1]–[F4], the local spherical frame and connection conventions in the Statement.
The vectors are real unit vectors orthogonal to each other and to , and , . Hence has unit norm and satisfies , so it is a local frame of . Direct differentiation gives and ; the diagonal terms vanish. Therefore Multiplying by gives , and differentiating gives .
In Cartesian coordinates, the north and south gauges for are Their denominators are nonzero on the north and south charts respectively, so they are smooth there. Since and , the gauges for are smooth as well. Each has unit norm because it differs from by a phase. On the overlap, , and the transition map has degree .
Since , [F2] gives , hence the normalized Berry flux is . The skew-Hermitian curvature is because . Under the stated Chern-Weil convention,
Suppose a global smooth unit section of existed. Then would be a globally defined smooth real one-form with compact support because is compact by [F4]. On each local unit frame, writing with gives ; the correction is closed because , so . The sphere is oriented and boundaryless by the Statement and [F4], so [F3] yields . This contradicts from step 2.1. Therefore no global smooth unit helicity eigenvector exists.
Remarks
The displayed real Berry-flux convention gives , while the explicitly defined standard Chern-Weil convention gives . The sign difference follows from and is a convention conversion; both numbers are nonzero and give the same obstruction. The proof concerns the helicity eigenline bundles only.
