How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Smooth maps are continuous
Statement
Let and be smooth manifolds and let . If is of class at for some , then is continuous at ; the same holds when is smooth at . Consequently every map that is (or smooth) on an open set is continuous on that open set. For continuity is part of the definition and is asserted, not proved.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: Smooth manifolds , a map , a point , and such that is at .
The published definition requires to be continuous at before calling it at . It also requires smooth charts at and at with for which the representative is near ( and smooth maps between smooth manifolds, maps and multi-index derivative notation in Euclidean space).
Charts are homeomorphisms (Manifold charts, coordinate domains, and coordinate functions).
A map with continuous first partial derivatives is totally differentiable and therefore continuous (If all partial derivatives exist on a neighbourhood and are continuous at a point, then the map is totally differentiable there with Jacobian derivative, Total differentiability gives a local increment bound and therefore continuity).
Continuity is local on the source, and composites of continuous maps are continuous (Continuity may be checked on any open cover, and on any finite closed cover; composites of continuous maps are continuous).
Proof
Continuity at follows immediately from the definition in [F1]. The same definition requires continuity on an open set when a map is called there. Thus the first and open-set conclusions hold directly, including the case.
The coordinate condition gives the same conclusion directly when : on a neighbourhood of , the representative has continuous first partial derivatives and is continuous by [L1]. There . Charts and their inverses are continuous by [F2], so this composite is continuous near . The required chart neighbourhood with is already part of [F1].
A smooth map is , and continuity on an open set also follows pointwise. The chart calculation in step 1.2 is compatible with, but not needed for, the continuity premise built into the published definition.
