How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Specified causal material response: transfer function, dispersion relations and the passivity condition
The causal polarisation response of the memory branch of the material-closure postulate, with the transfer function, its regularity and growth properties, the principal-value dispersion relations (unsubtracted, instantaneous-subtracted, finitely Taylor-subtracted and constitutive-polynomial branches) and the monochromatic work formula together with the exact positive-semidefiniteness criterion for passivity. Conditional on the declared kernel or transfer-function hypotheses and on AC_omega (and Dependent Choice in the integrable branches); passivity is not inferred from causality; no material, microscopic or empirical claim. For arbitrary real instantaneous matrices, storage is assigned only to the symmetric quadratic part and the antisymmetric part is retained in work and in the total frequencywise passivity criterion. Each finite subtraction order requires its own growth and regularity hypotheses; higher allowed orders are retained.
Statement
Assume the memory branch of the material-closure postulate Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch in a material rest frame, and assume the hypotheses of the mathematical suppliers Causal convolution response, transfer function and dispersion relations and Dispersion relations for a finitely subtracted analytic response: Countable Choice for the smooth comparison route and, in the integrable branches, Dependent Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (), The axiom of dependent choice: a relation in which every element is related to something admits an -indexed chain). Let be the electric-field history in the material rest frame, read componentwise in its spatial basis (The electric and magnetic fields as fixed-time spatial vector fields), and let be the polarisation response declared by the model.
(a) [Causal response] If the kernel of Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch(c) satisfies , then for every bounded continuous history the response is well defined for every , bounded and continuous, linear in , and causal: histories equal on produce responses equal on .
(b) [Transfer function and dispersion relations] If is smooth with compact support in , the transfer function is entire, satisfies for real , obeys for with (with the whole-plane bound carrying the exponential factor when ), and its entries satisfy the principal-value dispersion relations of Causal convolution response, transfer function and dispersion relations(b). If is locally absolutely continuous on with and , then is holomorphic on the open upper half-plane, continuous with continuous first derivative on the real boundary, obeys the stated growth bound, and satisfies the same pair of relations; an instantaneous real part may be added to the model, and the relations apply to for .
(c) [Finitely-subtracted and polynomial branches] For each specified integer for which the full hypotheses of Dispersion relations for a finitely subtracted analytic response hold for the declared response transfer function, its -subtracted relations apply entrywise. Any transfer-only physical branch additionally requires entrywise for every real , including real , as in Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch(c); scalar transfers act as scalar matrices. These hypotheses include upper-half-plane holomorphy, continuity on the closed upper half-plane, the stated boundary regularity, holomorphy near the real subtraction point , and the order-specific growth bound outside a compact set. The Taylor polynomial and residual are
with removable values and the boundary hypothesis read entrywise as in the supplier. A growth bound for one order permits every order under the same local analytic and boundary hypotheses; it does not justify lower orders for which the required growth fails. The unsubtracted case is included only under its own decay and boundary hypotheses: , , growth , and factor with the supplier's principal-value convention. The separate constitutive-polynomial branch declares the normalized polarisation , with real scalar coefficients (acting as scalar matrices) or real matrices whose entries carry , and satisfying the supplier's integrable causal hypotheses, is causal on histories with bounded continuous derivatives through order . Its transfer is with . Subtracting the declared leaves the proved relations for , without assuming that is the Taylor polynomial .
(d) [Monochromatic work, instantaneous work and passivity] Let , and . Write for the full transfer matrix used in the response: it is without an instantaneous term and when the arbitrary real instantaneous matrix is present. For a transfer-function-only branch adopt as the harmonic response convention; in a kernel or normalized polynomial branch this follows by substitution. Here has units , is dimensionless, denotes conjugate transpose, for a complex matrix , a matrix is Hermitian when and is positive semidefinite when for every , in the convention of Causal convolution response, transfer function and dispersion relations(d), and with . The period-averaged work per unit volume, in , is
It is nonnegative for every if and only if the full Hermitian dissipative part
is positive semidefinite. This frequencywise monochromatic passivity is an additional model condition, not a consequence of causality or dispersion.
For the instantaneous part set and , so and . For any real history its exact instantaneous work split is
The symmetric part therefore supplies the quadratic storage term; no positivity of that term is asserted unless is additionally positive semidefinite. The antisymmetric part has but can supply nonzero work over a cycle. Its monochromatic contribution is , and
Thus only a symmetric real instantaneous matrix contributes purely this storage term for all histories; for an arbitrary real instantaneous matrix the passivity test must include its antisymmetric contribution. For example, , and give , zero quadratic storage and averaged work . The opposite circular amplitude gives averaged work , so this instantaneous response is causal but fails the all-amplitude passivity condition.
(e) [Scope] The response is declared in the material rest frame of Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch(a); boosting the material changes the fields and the rest observer, and no frame-independent instantaneous response law is asserted. The framework does not claim that any particular material realises these branches, no microscopic mechanism is derived, and no empirical statement is made.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The memory-branch model data of the Statement in the material rest frame: either a kernel or one of the declared transfer-function branches of the Statement, together with the temporal Fourier convention of the suppliers and the constants of Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values; Countable Choice, and Dependent Choice in the integrable branches.
The memory branch of the material closure declares the rest-frame polarisation response with a real matrix kernel in , or a finitely-subtracted analytic transfer function with the holomorphy, boundary, growth and real-history symmetry hypotheses listed in the Statement; the kernel or transfer data are model data, and causality and passivity are not automatic (Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch, clauses (c)-(d)).
Clause (a) of the response theorem: for , and bounded continuous , the convolution converges absolutely for every , read componentwise, with the componentwise bound ; the response is bounded and continuous, the map is linear, and it is causal (Causal convolution response, transfer function and dispersion relations, clause (a)).
Clauses (b)-(d) of the response theorem: in the compact smooth-kernel branch the transfer function is entire with for real , obeys for , , and the whole-plane bound with the factor for , and satisfies the principal-value dispersion relations; in the locally-absolutely-continuous integrable branch is holomorphic on the open upper half-plane, continuous with continuous first derivative on the real boundary, satisfies the stated growth bound and the same relations, and an instantaneous real matrix is subtracted before applying them, ; in the monochromatic clause, with , , , , and this period-averaged work is nonnegative for every if and only if satisfies for every (Causal convolution response, transfer function and dispersion relations, clauses (b)-(d)).
The finitely-subtracted supplier: under upper-half-plane holomorphy, continuity on the closure, boundary regularity away from the real subtraction point, holomorphy near it and the order-specific growth outside a compact set, the Taylor polynomial and residual with removable value satisfy the two -subtracted principal-value relations; the unsubtracted case holds with , and growth ; and for real coefficients or matrices and satisfying the integrable causal hypotheses, the response is causal with transfer , , the polynomial subtraction leaving the proved relations for (Dispersion relations for a finitely subtracted analytic response).
is the framework's positive constant; multiplying a response by the positive scalar preserves the existence, boundedness, continuity, linearity and causality conclusions and rescales the monochromatic work exactly as displayed (Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values, clause (a)).
The one-variable sum, scalar-multiple and product rules hold for differentiable maps (Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: , , , and when ), and the Euclidean dot product of The Euclidean inner product on is the symmetric positive-definite bilinear form used for the quadratic form .
For complex scalar amplitudes and , (Period averages of products of real parts of complex exponentials); summing applies to arbitrary complex vector amplitudes. The exponential derivative is itself (The complex exponential is entire and its complex derivative is itself) and the chain rule differentiates its linear time argument (The chain rule for total derivatives: ).
Proof
Since by [L3] and whenever is, clause (a) of the Statement is clause (a) of [L1] with and kernel : for every bounded continuous the convolution converges absolutely for every , obeys the componentwise bound with and , is bounded, continuous and linear in , and is causal.
Clause (b) is the compact smooth-kernel and integrable branches of [L5] applied to the original kernel : is the unscaled transform, whereas includes the prefactor . This gives entireness, the reality identity , the decay and whole-plane bounds and the dispersion relations in the compact branch; holomorphy on the open upper half-plane, boundary regularity, the growth bound and the same relations in the integrable branch. Adding the real instantaneous matrix changes the total transfer to and leaves , to which the relations apply; no work or storage property is asserted by this analytic subtraction.
Clause (c) instantiates [L2] at each declared order whose hypotheses hold; the removable values and entrywise boundary hypotheses are those of the supplier, so the -subtracted pair of relations holds entrywise for , and the case requires its own decay. If the growth bound holds at , then for and one has , while on both sides are bounded by a constant, so the same local analytic and boundary hypotheses give the bound at every larger order; no lower order is thereby justified. The constitutive-polynomial branch is the last clause of [L2]: the derivative of contributes the multiplier , so the declared transfer polynomial is exactly , the normalized response is causal and multiplication by preserves that property, and subtracting leaves the proved relations for , with no identification of with the Taylor polynomial .
In the kernel branch, the reality of and absolute convergence permit projecting the integral of onto real parts, giving ; the instantaneous and normalized polynomial terms add their declared transfer matrices. For the transfer-only branch this is the stated harmonic premise. Write , an arbitrary fixed complex matrix. By [L6], and . Since , is Hermitian and . Thus, because , nonnegative work for every is equivalent to for every , the precise meaning of positive semidefiniteness. No kernel hypothesis is needed for this finite-dimensional calculation.
For the instantaneous part write with symmetric and antisymmetric, as in the Statement. For any real history, the product rule of [L4] gives , while because ; hence , the exact split displayed. For a periodic history the storage derivative has zero period average, and with the remaining average is ; since is real, and , so . In the explicit example has and for ; directly and , so the work is at every time, while gives , and averaged work . More generally a real antisymmetric with gives for , and the conjugate amplitude gives . Consequently the instantaneous response alone, when , fails all-amplitude passivity; the full response must still be tested using . A nonzero cycle work also precludes purely quadratic storage for every history, so that property requires .
Clauses (a)-(d) of the Statement now follow: (a) from step 1.1, (b) from step 1.2, (c) from step 1.3, and (d) from steps 1.4 and 2.1, with the passivity criterion holding for the full transfer matrix and the storage term assigned only to the symmetric part of an arbitrary real instantaneous matrix. Clause (e) fixes the scope: all statements are conditional on the declared model data of [A1] and on the Choice hypotheses of the suppliers, no material realization, microscopic mechanism or empirical claim is made, and the growth, boundary and decay hypotheses are required per branch and per subtraction order.
