How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The covariant field stress-energy tensor and its balance law
Conditional statement on the smooth branch of the framework's Maxwell fields: the symmetric traceless stress-energy tensor quadratic in the field, its component identification with the energy density, Poynting flux, momentum density and Maxwell stress, the local balance with the Lorentz four-force density, and conditional total conservation with an adopted symmetric matter tensor together with finite-box flux identities. Excluded: the weak branch, singular support, products of distributions, any derivation of a matter tensor from vacuum Maxwell, radiation reaction, self-force and any empirical claim.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The smooth branch of The microscopic vacuum Maxwell equations: smooth and weak branches on the laboratory region of Laboratory geometry: a restricted inertial chart, its spatial slices and fixed-time fields: the jointly fields of The electric and magnetic fields as fixed-time spatial vector fields with the additional derivatives required by each Maxwell equation existing and continuous, the continuous sources of Charge parameter, frame charge and current densities, volume charge and flux, and the four-current, and the constants of Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values; the electromagnetic two-form with the components and conventions of [F2]; the four-current ; the objects of Vacuum electromagnetic energy density and energy flux (the Poynting vector) and of Momentum density, Maxwell stress, momentum flux and orbital angular density in vacuum; the tensor of the statement's definition; and, in clause (d), the adopted matter tensor of [F7].
The four smooth-branch equations hold pointwise on ; by Tensor Maxwell equations equal the four laboratory Maxwell equations (a) the two tensor systems and hold there, and every first partial derivative of a component of appearing in or exists and is continuous (The microscopic vacuum Maxwell equations: smooth and weak branches (a), The electric and magnetic fields as fixed-time spatial vector fields, Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values, Charge parameter, frame charge and current densities, volume charge and flux, and the four-current (c); , ).
In the laboratory chart with the components satisfy , , , , , , so and ; the contraction is , and the elementary identities and hold, with and the Euclidean structure (The electromagnetic two-form, its observer decomposition and the four-current (a), (b), The cross product in , The Euclidean inner product on ).
The definitions: , ; ; ; (Vacuum electromagnetic energy density and energy flux (the Poynting vector) (a), Momentum density, Maxwell stress, momentum flux and orbital angular density in vacuum (a), (b), (c)).
For a proper orthochronous change of chart the components of the same satisfy and , every contraction of one contravariant with one covariant index is invariant, and (Transformation of tensor, covector, derivative and current components under affine Lorentz maps (iii), Covariance, boosts and the two field invariants (c)).
Regularity criterion: a map assigning to each point a type- tensor is a tensor field exactly when all its components in one, or equivalently every, inertial chart are functions of the chart coordinates, and regularity of components is preserved under the linear component changes of a chart transition (C^k tensor fields on affine Minkowski space and their inertial components).
The coordinate partial derivatives are those of Directional derivatives and partial derivatives of a map , and sums and products of differentiable functions obey the product rule; a finite sum of products of continuous functions is continuous (Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: , , , and when ).
Balance and interpretation suppliers: Local and fixed-volume electromagnetic energy balance (a) gives and Local and fixed-volume momentum balance for smooth sources (a) gives componentwise, with at fixed time and the force density; clause (ii) of The Lorentz coupling: external force on a test charge and the continuum force and power densities identifies and as the electromagnetic power and force densities delivered to a matter model satisfying that clause, and its clause (iii) records the scope. In clause (d), is a symmetric type- field on with .
Finite-flux theorem Finite-box stress balance and the flux form of conservation: for a symmetric type- field on an open neighbourhood of a closed axis-parallel box , with , the box identity and the slice-balance identity hold, the latter stating that equals the integral of over the slab minus the three side-flux differences; and if on the slab and the side components vanish on the side faces, then . All face integrals are Riemann integrals over the remaining coordinates.
Proof
(Clause (a): symmetry, trace and regularity) Since , the first term satisfies , and swapping the two factors and relabelling the dummy indices while using symmetry of gives ; the second term is symmetric, so . For the trace, and , ; hence . Each component is a finite sum of products of components of (a tensor field), so is a symmetric type- tensor field by [F5]; by the product rule [F6], , in which the first factor is continuous by and the remaining derivative factors exist and are continuous by the smooth-branch hypotheses of [F1]; hence is continuous on .
(Clause (a): the transformation law) Let be a proper orthochronous change of inertial chart. By [F4], , because and ; similarly by the two component laws and the inverse-matrix identity, and . Substituting in the definition gives , the stated type- transformation law.
(Clause (b): the components) Substituting [F2] into the definition: , using , and [F3]. Next , because and [F3]. Finally ; here and by [F2], so with , , again by . This is the displayed component identification, and the spatial block is minus the Maxwell stress of [F3].
(Clause (c): the divergence identity) By the product rule [F6], , the last term from and the factor . The first term is by of [F1] and . For the cancellation, contract in the form with and fix the free index : the first term is , the third is after relabelling , which equals because and , and the middle term is , since (the two terms of the derivative of the product are equal after relabelling). Hence , that is . Raising the free index, , so the second and third terms of the product-rule expression cancel. Therefore , and dividing by gives with . Algebraically and , so ; its reading as the electromagnetic four-force density delivered to matter uses the separately adopted clause (ii) of The Lorentz coupling: external force on a test charge and the continuum force and power densities [F7].
(Clause (c): component identities and comparison) Reading the balance of step 1.4 with and using , from step 1.3 and gives , while ; multiplying by gives , which is clause (a) of Local and fixed-volume electromagnetic energy balance [F7]. Reading it with and using , gives and , that is , which is clause (a) of Local and fixed-volume momentum balance for smooth sources [F7]; by clause (ii) of The Lorentz coupling: external force on a test charge and the continuum force and power densities those source terms are the power and force densities delivered to the matter model, so the balance reads as the field-matter balance in that interpretation.
(Clause (d): matter coupling, total conservation, finite flux and angular current) Let be the adopted symmetric type- field of [F7] with . Adding it to step 1.4 gives pointwise on , and the total tensor is and symmetric. On every closed axis-parallel box with an open neighbourhood contained in , the box and slice identities of [F8] apply to the total tensor because its divergence vanishes on the box: the box identity has zero left-hand side, and the slice balance expresses as minus the three side-flux differences, all side terms retained; write their sum as , with the same signed faces as in the Statement. Thus by clause (b) of [F8]. Equality of the two slice totals is therefore equivalent to , and constancy throughout is equivalent to this equality for every . The facewise-zero hypothesis in clause (c) of [F8] forces every side integral to vanish and hence is sufficient. It is not necessary: take the zero Maxwell fields and sources, and the constant adopted matter tensor with . It is , symmetric and divergence-free; all are zero, while for the integrals on the two side faces are both the nonzero number and cancel in their signed difference. Zero divergence alone supplies the balance identity, not a guarantee that the net side flux vanishes. For the angular current , the product rule and the coordinate identities and [F6] give , the last equality by the symmetry of the total tensor established in step 1.1 and the vanishing divergence.
(Clause (e): status and scope) Clauses (a), (b), (c) and (d) are steps 1.1-1.4 and 2.1-2.2: the symmetry, trace and transformation law; the component identification with , , and ; the divergence identity with the algebraically evaluated four-force density; and the conditional total conservation, finite-box and angular conclusions with the adopted matter tensor. The argument used the smooth-branch hypotheses and the two tensor systems [F1], the dictionary and contractions [F2], the definitions of the energy flux and stress objects [F3], the component transformation law [F4], the tensor-field regularity criterion [F5], the product rule [F6], the independently proved local identities and the adopted continuum coupling [F7], and the finite-box theorem [F8]. The divergence is a product identity of objects: it is not asserted for the weak branch, at singular source support or for any product of distributions; symmetry, zero trace and the component display are algebraic; no matter tensor is derived from vacuum Maxwell, no radiation reaction or self-force is included, and no empirical claim is made. No choice principle is used.
Source notes
The three cited treatments construct the quadratic stress-energy tensor from the field tensor, verify its symmetry and tracelessness, compute its components against the energy density, Poynting flux, momentum density and Maxwell stress, and derive the divergence identity against the four-force density and the angular-momentum continuity requiring a symmetric stress tensor, each in its own conventions. The deduction above performs the component algebra and the cyclic-identity cancellation in the framework's fixed dictionary (, , , ) and compares the result with the framework's independently proved local balance identities; the conversion from the sources' conventions is carried out here rather than assumed, and the four-force-density interpretation is the separately adopted continuum coupling of The Lorentz coupling: external force on a test charge and the continuum force and power densities (ii).
