How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

The Heisenberg picture: equivalent predictions and the domain-qualified equation of motion

Physical scope

A conditional consequence of the autonomous-dynamics postulate P4 and the observable and probability postulate P2 in the reading of this page for a declared isolated system: the Heisenberg representative of a bounded assigned sharp observable is again a bounded assigned sharp observable with the same unit, norm and spectrum, the two pictures assign the same outcome laws to every preparation, the domain-qualified Heisenberg equation holds, and energy-compatible bounded observables are frozen in the Heisenberg picture. No measurement, apparatus, detector, driven-dynamics or open-system claim is made, and no empirical result is asserted.

Statement

Adopt the state and composition postulate State and composition postulate P1: Hilbert spaces, preparations and composite systems (P1), the observable and probability postulate in the reading of Assigned sharp observables and the outcome law of the framework (P2), and the autonomous-dynamics postulate Autonomous dynamics postulate P4: self-adjoint generators and unitary evolution (P4), and assume the Axiom of Countable Choice and the Axiom of Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (ACω), The Axiom of Choice). Let (Hop,uH) be the assigned energy observable of a declared isolated system with state space H (The state space of the framework: preparations, pure rays and density operators) and flow U(t)=exp⁡(−itHop/ℏ) as in Assigned energy observable, unitary flow and the two pictures of autonomous evolution, and let (A,uA) be a bounded assigned sharp observable: A∈B(H) is self-adjoint everywhere defined (A bounded linear operator between normed spaces, Self-adjoint, positive, unitary and normal operators) with spectral projection-valued measure EA (Spectral theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators (PVM form), Projection valued measure). Put AH(t):=U(t)∗AU(t)=U(−t)AU(t)(t∈R). Then:

(a) The Heisenberg representative is an assigned sharp observable. For every t, AH(t) is bounded and self-adjoint with ∥AH(t)∥=∥A∥ and spectrum σ(AH(t))=σ(A), and its spectral projection-valued measure is EAH(t)(B)=U(−t)EA(B)U(t)(B⊆R Borel); with the declared unit uA it is again a bounded assigned sharp observable of the framework, and AH(0)=A.

(b) The two pictures assign the same laws. For every preparation ρ (The state space of the framework: preparations, pure rays and density operators), every Borel set B⊆R and every t, μρ(t)A(B)=μρ(0)AH(t)(B), where μ⋅⋅ is the outcome law of Assigned sharp observables and the outcome law of the framework and ρ(t)=U(t)ρ(0)U(t)∗; for the pure preparation of a unit vector ψ this reads ∥EA(B)U(t)ψ∥2=∥EAH(t)(B)ψ∥2. In particular the expectation value of the bounded observable agrees, tr⁡(ρ(t)A)=tr⁡(ρ(0)AH(t)).

(c) Heisenberg equation. If A D(Hop)⊆D(Hop), then for every x∈D(Hop) the curve t↦AH(t)x is differentiable at every t and iℏ ddtAH(t)x=[AH(t),Hop]x=(AH(t)Hop−HopAH(t))x.

(d) Energy-compatible observables are frozen. If A is compatible with the energy, that is EA(B)EH(C)=EH(C)EA(B) for all Borel B,C (Assigned energy observable, unitary flow and the two pictures of autonomous evolution clause (f)), then AH(t)=A for every t, and by (b) the outcome law of (A,uA) is the same in ρ(t) as in ρ(0) for every preparation.

(e) Status. Clauses (a)-(d) are conditional consequences of P1, P2 and P4 and the cited mathematics. They introduce no new physical assumption, no measurement or apparatus model, no collapse, no driven or open dynamics; they make no claim about which laboratory quantity realizes (A,uA) and record no empirical result.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The adopted postulates P1, P2, P4; the Axiom of Countable Choice and the Axiom of Choice; the assigned energy observable (Hop,uH) with flow U(t); a bounded self-adjoint A∈B(H) with spectral PVM EA; the representatives AH(t)=U(t)∗AU(t); a preparation ρ; a Borel set B; a vector x∈D(Hop); real t.

[F1]

Flow and pictures. U is the strongly continuous unitary flow of P4(ii); the Schroedinger-picture evolutions are ψ(t)=U(t)ψ(0) and ρ(t)=U(t)ρ(0)U(t)∗, which is a preparation for every t; and for every bounded B0 one has tr⁡(ρ(t)B0)=tr⁡(ρ(0)U(t)∗B0U(t)) (The Schroedinger-picture flow: unitarity, domain invariance and the domain-qualified equation clauses (a) and (d), Assigned energy observable, unitary flow and the two pictures of autonomous evolution clauses (b) and (c)).

[F2]

Heisenberg flow. With T=−Hop/ℏ, the conjugates A(t)=U(t)∗AU(t)=AH(t) satisfy: AH(t) bounded with ∥AH(t)∥=∥A∥ and AH(t)∗=AH(t); EAH(t)(B)=U(−t)EA(B)U(t) and σ(AH(t))=σ(A); if AD(Hop)⊆D(Hop) then ddtAH(t)x=−i[T,AH(t)]x for x∈D(T) (Heisenberg flow of a bounded operator: conjugates, covariance and the equation of motion clauses (a), (b), (d)).

[F3]

Conserved spectral laws. Let K be self-adjoint with PVM EK and U(t)=e−itK/ℏ. If a bounded operator B0 satisfies B0EK(C)=EK(C)B0 for every Borel C, then B0U(t)=U(t)B0 for every t; and if a PVM F satisfies F(S)EK(C)=EK(C)F(S) for all S in its measurable space and all Borel C, then tr⁡(U(t)ρU(t)∗F(S))=tr⁡(ρF(S)) for every preparation ρ and all t,S (Conserved spectral probability laws for commuting observables and stationary eigenrays clauses (a) and (b)(ii)).

[F4]

Outcome law. For an assigned sharp observable (A0,uA0) with spectral PVM EA0, the outcome law of a preparation ρ is μρA0(B)=tr⁡(ρEA0(B)), equal to ∥EA0(B)ψ∥2 for the pure preparation of a unit ψ (Assigned sharp observables and the outcome law of the framework clause (b)).

[F5]

Spectral uniqueness. A self-adjoint operator has a unique regular PVM representing it, and two bounded self-adjoint operators with the same spectral PVM are equal (Spectral theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators (PVM form); for the bounded case the representing integral is ΦE(id)).

Proof

technique · direct; instantiate the mathematical Heisenberg flow at the generator $T=-H_{\mathrm{op}}/\hbar$, express the outcome law through the trace identity of the Schroedinger-picture theorem, and read the compatibility statement from the conserved-spectral-law theorem

Given: The data of the statement and [F1]-[F5].

1.1givenF2

[Representative and conjugation of the law] By [F2], AH(t) is bounded, self-adjoint and of norm ∥A∥, with spectral PVM EAH(t)(B)=U(−t)EA(B)U(t) and σ(AH(t))=σ(A), and AH(0)=U(0)∗AU(0)=A; with the declared unit uA it is an assigned sharp observable in the sense of Assigned sharp observables and the outcome law of the framework clause (a). This is (a).

2.1givenstep 1.1F1F4algebra

[Equality of laws] Let ρ be a preparation. By [F4] and [F1], μρ(t)A(B)=tr⁡(ρ(t)EA(B))=tr⁡(ρ(0)U(t)∗EA(B)U(t)), and by step 1.1 the last expression is tr⁡(ρ(0)EAH(t)(B)), which equals μρ(0)AH(t)(B) by [F4]; this is the first display of (b). For the pure preparation of a unit vector ψ, the same chain with ρ=Tψ,ψ gives ∥EA(B)U(t)ψ∥2=∥U(t)EAH(t)(B)ψ∥2=∥EAH(t)(B)ψ∥2, using EA(B)U(t)=U(t)EAH(t)(B), which follows from the PVM identity of step 1.1 by multiplying on the left by U(t).

2.2givenstep 1.1F2algebra

[Heisenberg equation] Assume A D(Hop)⊆D(Hop) and let x∈D(Hop)=D(T) with T=−Hop/ℏ. By [F2], ddtAH(t)x=−i[T,AH(t)]x; substituting T=−Hop/ℏ gives ddtAH(t)x=iℏ[Hop,AH(t)]x, and multiplying by iℏ gives iℏddtAH(t)x=−[Hop,AH(t)]x=[AH(t),Hop]x, which is the display of (c).

3.1givenstep 2.1F1algebra

[Expectation identity] Taking B0=A in the trace identity of [F1] and using AH(t)=U(t)∗AU(t) gives tr⁡(ρ(t)A)=tr⁡(ρ(0)AH(t)), the last assertion of (b).

3.2givenstep 1.1step 2.1F3F5algebra

[Frozen energy-compatible observables] Assume A is energy-compatible. For every Borel B, the bounded operator EA(B) commutes with every EH(C), so [F3] gives EA(B)U(t)=U(t)EA(B) for every t. Multiplying on the left by U(t)∗=U(−t) gives EAH(t)(B)=U(−t)EA(B)U(t)=EA(B) by step 1.1; hence AH(t) and A have the same spectral PVM and, by [F5], AH(t)=A for every t. With step 2.1 the outcome law of (A,uA) is therefore the same in ρ(t) as in ρ(0); this is (d).

4.1step 1.1step 2.1step 3.1step 2.2step 3.2∎

Steps 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 2.2 and 3.2 prove (a)-(d); clause (e) records the scope.

Remarks

  • The two pictures are not two theories. Step 2.1 is an identity between outcome laws, not a derivation of one picture from the other; the Schroedinger picture and the Heisenberg picture are two ways of computing the same numbers μρ(t)A(B).
  • Domain hypothesis in the equation of motion. The hypothesis A D(Hop)⊆D(Hop) in (c) is exactly what makes the differentiated products defined; the position, momentum and other unbounded quantities of later pages are not bounded observables and are not covered by this theorem.
