How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Bell's rockets and thread: constant chart separation and the criterion for longitudinal expansion of the translated congruence
A conditional kinematic thought experiment in flat classical special relativity about two prescribed rocket worldlines with equal chart-frame accelerations and a thread whose material points are modelled as following the translated congruence. It contains no dynamical or elastic model, no material failure criterion, no force law, no measurement and no empirical claim; breaking or tension of a real thread is explicitly not asserted, and no experimental data are used or invented. The preserved C2 worldline branch uses first-order C1 kinematics and an explicit C2 four-dimensional material family.
Statement
Adopt Adopted inertial covariance of the model equations and the SI conventions of SI units and coordinate conventions of the special-relativity framework in an inertial chart (Inertial frames and inertial charts of the affine Minkowski model). Let be an open interval containing , let be with , set and , let , and fix transverse coordinates . The rocket and thread-element worldlines are , with labels in an open interval containing ; the rockets are labels .
(a) Every member is future timelike: its chart-time tangent is with squared norm . Its common proper-time function is , and its proper four-velocity is with squared norm . All members have equal chart velocity and acceleration, , and their chart separation is the constant .
(b) The four-dimensional extension is essential for applying the material-family lemma. Choose open transverse intervals containing , put , let be the inverse on , and set
This is an injective immersion onto an open set, with and , where is a future unit field. Apply the first-order definitions in The material metric of a congruence: evolution of rest separations and preservation of the internal metric under Born rigidity, which agree with Kinematics of an observer congruence: acceleration, expansion, shear, vorticity and Born rigidity when smooth. The longitudinal unit rest vector is , and
This agrees with Fermi-Walker transport preserves the metric, and explicit rigid and non-rigid observer congruences (d), is nonzero exactly where , and changes sign with that product. When is smooth the full original smooth-congruence branch is recovered. Restricting the extension to fixed gives the prescribed thread.
(c) For its material label tangent , and . The vector generally is not , but horizontality implies . The internal longitudinal material metric is , so its length at common flow parameter is
It is an internal material metric length, not automatically the finite endpoint distance on one observer's orthogonal simultaneity hyperplane. The local evolution is
At a time with , , with equality exactly for . Chart separation stays ; the material length is constant precisely when is constant, and has nonzero local rate wherever .
(d) Under the stipulated material reading that thread elements follow these flow lines, the initial internal length is and its relative factor is . Relative to that initial state it stretches where , shrinks where , and has equal length where the factors agree. In the special initially resting case , the initial length is and every state with has stretch factor . No elasticity or failure criterion is supplied, so neither breaking nor a definite tension of an actual thread follows.
(e) The Rindler congruence in Fermi-Walker transport preserves the metric, and explicit rigid and non-rigid observer congruences (b) is Born rigid, with constant internal rest separations and unequal proper accelerations at distinct radial labels (Proper acceleration of a massive worldline and its agreement with the acceleration of an observer congruence). Equal chart-velocity and acceleration profiles in the translated family do not imply Born rigidity where . Constant chart separation and constant internal rest metric are distinct kinematic conditions.
(f) This is a conditional flat-spacetime deduction for prescribed worldlines and the stated material reading. It assumes no dynamical or elastic model, force law, material failure criterion, measurement or empirical fact, and asserts nothing about real threads or rockets. No choice principle is used.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: ; an inertial chart with ; an open interval ; a function with ; , ; ; transverse , intervals , ; label interval ; the worldlines ; and, in (b)-(c), the map on with .
The framework adopts the affine Minkowski model as spacetime with its causal structure (Adopted inertial covariance of the model equations, Oriented time-oriented affine Minkowski space (the spacetime primitives)).
In every inertial chart , the matrix of is in the orthonormal frame, and points are determined by their coordinates (SI units and coordinate conventions of the special-relativity framework, Inertial frames and inertial charts of the affine Minkowski model).
A curve is exactly when its coordinate representation is; its tangent is read in ; a curve has -in-parameter tangents (Curves, regular causal curves and future timelike worldlines in affine Minkowski space (a)).
Causal classification and the chart criterion: timelike means and in every inertial chart (Timelike, null, spacelike and causal vectors of a Lorentz vector space, Time orientation, future and past timelike/null/causal vectors, and the closed cones, The closed future cone in inertial coordinates: description, finite sums, and the coordinate criterion for causal reachability (a)).
Four-velocity of a future timelike worldline: , with ; for curves the four-acceleration is the proper-time derivative of (Four-velocity and four-acceleration of a future timelike worldline (a),(b), Norms of four-velocity and four-acceleration, and the observer rest-space decomposition (a)).
Proper time up to a constant, and the reparametrization tangent (Proper time along a future timelike worldline, The proper-time function is a strictly increasing C^1 parametrization with C^1 inverse).
The Lorentz factor of the future unit field relative to the inertial chart observer is with iff ; along a congruence flow line the four-velocity is (Norms of four-velocity and four-acceleration, and the observer rest-space decomposition (d), (a)).
Material metric and its evolution: for a injective immersion with material directions , is a positive-definite material metric; ; for nonzero , satisfies with ; makes constant in the flow parameter; horizontality of gives (The material metric of a congruence: evolution of rest separations and preservation of the internal metric under Born rigidity (a)-(d)).
Born rigidity and expansion: for data the projected deformation kills -components, and Born rigidity agrees with the smooth definition; restriction to a subfamily keeps the induced metric data (Kinematics of an observer congruence: acceleration, expansion, shear, vorticity and Born rigidity (c),(d), The material metric of a congruence: evolution of rest separations and preservation of the internal metric under Born rigidity).
Translated-congruence data: for the field of the translated worldlines the unit longitudinal rest vector is and , nonzero exactly where ; and the Rindler congruence is Born rigid with constant rest slices and accelerations , (Fermi-Walker transport preserves the metric, and explicit rigid and non-rigid observer congruences (b),(d)).
Proper acceleration of a congruence flow line: , so -const Rindler flow lines have proper acceleration (Proper acceleration of a massive worldline and its agreement with the acceleration of an observer congruence (b)).
The covariant derivative of a field along a curve is the ordinary derivative of its components; for data the first-order coordinate formulas of The flat covariant derivative on affine Minkowski space and fields along curves (d),(e) apply.
Chain rule and derivative algebra: for composable maps the total chain rule holds, and sums, products and composites of differentiable functions are differentiable with the usual rules (The chain rule for total derivatives: , The chain rule, in one line from Carathéodory: if is differentiable at and is differentiable at , then is differentiable at with , Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: , , , and when , The derivative of at a point that is a limit point of , and differentiability on a set, Directional derivatives and partial derivatives of a map ).
The natural logarithm is defined on positive real numbers; there (The natural logarithm as the inverse of the exponential function, The natural logarithm has derivative 1/x and equals the integral from 1 to x of 1/t). Thus for a positive differentiable length , by [L13], where is constant.
Proof
(The rocket tangents and chart separation.) For fixed the coordinate functions of are , , and the two constants; differentiating with [L13] gives , whose squared norm is , with time component ; hence is future timelike by [L4] and is by [L3]. The chart separation of labels is , in particular for the two rockets; the chart velocity and acceleration are and for every label.
(The translated congruence data.) By [L10] the longitudinal unit rest vector of is , horizontal () with , and the first-order deformation satisfies , nonzero exactly where and changing sign with that product; when is smooth these first-order expressions agree with the smooth congruence definitions by [L9], and Born rigidity is .
(Common proper time and four-velocity.) By step 1.1 each worldline is future timelike, so its proper-time function is by [L6] and step 1.1, the same function for every . The four-velocity is by [L5], with .
(The four-dimensional extension.) Since is strictly increasing and with , it has a inverse on with by [L6]; because is , is and is , so is . The image of is the open set of events with , , and , with inverse . Thus is injective and in all variables, with , , and , using the chain rule [L13]; the four partial derivatives are linearly independent, so is an immersion. The field has and time component with , so it is a future unit timelike field, because is .
(Clause (a).) Steps 1.1 and 1.2 give: every member is future timelike with squared tangent norm ; the common proper-time function is ; the four-velocity is with ; all labels share the chart velocity and chart acceleration ; and the chart separation of any two labels is constant in .
(Clause (b): the material-family analysis applies.) By step 3.1 the map is an injective immersion with , so the material metric of [L8] is defined on ; the material direction is constant, and restricting to , gives the prescribed thread worldlines. The longitudinal rest vector of the family is of step 1.2 and ; when is smooth the smooth-congruence branch of [L9] is recovered.
(Clause (e): contrast with the Born-rigid Rindler congruence.) By [L10] the Rindler congruence is Born rigid, so its rest slices are isometric with constant internal rest separations; the proper accelerations of its flow lines are by [L11] and [L10], which differ for distinct radial labels. In the translated family, by contrast, all members have equal chart velocity and acceleration profiles (step 3.2) and constant chart separation , yet is nonzero wherever (step 1.2), so the congruence is not Born rigid there. Hence equal chart-frame accelerations and constant chart separation are distinct from Born rigidity and from constant internal rest metric.
(Clause (c): the material length and its rate.) For and of step 3.1, , so by the identities of [L8] and [L9] , and ; also in general, but horizontality of gives . Hence and . By the evolution formula of [L8] and the logarithm derivative of [L14], and ; multiplying by gives . With , by [L7], so with equality exactly for ; the chart separation remains by step 1.1, so the material length is constant exactly when is constant and otherwise has the stated nonzero rate wherever .
(Clause (d): the material reading.) Under the stipulated reading that the thread elements follow the flow lines, the internal length at common flow parameter is by step 5.1, so the initial value is and the relative factor is ; it stretches where , shrinks where , and is equal where the factors agree. In the special case one has and (by ) whenever by [L7]. No elasticity or failure criterion is available in the given data, so neither breaking nor a definite tension follows; the statement asserts only the kinematic material reading.
(Clause (f): scope.) Every claim was derived for the prescribed family and the stated material reading, using only the cited definitional and kinematic suppliers: no elasticity, material failure criterion, force law, measurement or empirical input was used; the thread is an ideal material reading of the translated congruence, and no claim about real threads or rockets is made. All computations are finite-dimensional and no choice principle was used.
