How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Closed immersions into affine schemes are quotient spectra
Statement
For a ring , closed immersions are, up to unique isomorphism over , precisely the morphisms for ideals .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A closed immersion , with the published scheme conventions. We work with the repository's permitted Axiom of Choice.
A closed immersion is a homeomorphism onto a closed subset with surjective structure-sheaf map; schemes have affine open neighbourhoods, and affine schemes are quasi-compact. (Closed immersions of schemes, Schemes, Affine schemes and their coordinate rings, Every affine scheme is quasi-compact)
Closed sets in a spectrum are vanishing sets of ideals, principal opens form a basis, and localization identifies with . Under AC, a proper ideal is contained in a maximal ideal and the nilradical is the intersection of all primes. (The vanishing sets define the Zariski topology on the prime spectrum, Principal distinguished subsets of the prime spectrum, A principal localization identifies its spectrum with a distinguished open, In a nonzero commutative ring, every proper ideal is contained in a maximal ideal, The nilradical is the intersection of all prime ideals, The Axiom of Choice)
Morphisms to affine schemes correspond to maps on global sections, and affine schemes and rings are contravariantly equivalent. (Morphisms to an affine scheme and global sections, Affine schemes are contravariantly equivalent to commutative rings)
Affine principal-open sections and stalks are localizations; module localization is exact, and a localized element vanishes exactly when some denominator annihilates it. Sheaf surjectivity is detected on stalks. Quotient spectra identify with the vanishing set of the kernel ideal. (Sections and restrictions on distinguished opens of an affine scheme, The stalk of the affine structure sheaf at a prime is A_p, Localisation of modules is exact, Localisation of a module at a multiplicative subset, A sequence of abelian sheaves is exact exactly when it is exact on every stalk, Prime ideals of a quotient ring are exactly the prime ideals containing the ideal)
Sections of a sheaf on an open cover are the equalizer of the restriction maps to pairwise intersections. (The sheaf axiom is the equalizer condition on a cover)
AC use: The prime-ideal and nilradical assertions in F2 detect the unit ideal and nilpotence, and detect a nonzero cokernel by localization. No choice is needed for the finite subcovers.
Proof
Write . By [F1], and hence are quasi-compact. Choose a finite affine open cover of . Since has the subspace topology on , the principal-open basis in [F2] and quasi-compactness supply finitely many labelled functions whose cover , each lying in one . The inverse image of is the principal open defined by in that affine chart, so is affine. Empty covers are allowed.
The cover implies , hence by [F2]: a proper ideal in a nonzero ring would lie in a maximal ideal. For the zero ring the equality is immediate. Thus for finitely many . On each affine , every image of lies in all primes, since every point maps into ; it is nilpotent by [F2]. Finiteness of the cover supplies a common exponent, so each restriction is nilpotent globally by the sheaf axiom. The finite sum is nilpotent by the multinomial expansion. Consequently is a unit, with inverse a finite geometric sum. The generate the unit ideal.
Put and write also for the pulled-back global sections. The affine opens cover by step 1.1. If this list is empty, is empty and , giving . Otherwise put and . Each intersection is the principal open defined by in the affine , so is affine by [F2]. By [F5], is the kernel of the difference of restriction maps , a map of -modules. Fix . Exact localization in [F4] preserves this kernel, and localization commutes with finite products by taking a common denominator in any finite tuple. Basic-open sections in [F4] identify and with sections on and , respectively, respecting restrictions. Their kernel is therefore by [F5], since the cover . Thus restriction gives a ring isomorphism : all maps come from restriction and fraction multiplication. By [F3] the identity of defines a canonical map . Its inverse image of is , and on that open its comorphism is precisely this ring isomorphism. The sections generate the unit ideal by step 2.1, so the cover . These local inverse morphisms agree on overlaps because each inverts , and glue to an inverse of . Hence in every case.
Let correspond to by [F3]. For any prime , sections of on are . Taking the colimit over identifies its stalk with . The surjective sheaf map in [F1] therefore gives a surjection . Exact localization in [F4] implies for . If were nonzero, [F2] would give a maximal ideal containing its proper annihilator. Then in : vanishing would require a denominator outside annihilating , contrary to that containment. Thus and is onto. For , unitality already forces . Setting gives and the required isomorphism over .
Conversely, the spectrum map of is a homeomorphism onto by [F4]: contraction identifies its primes and all their closed vanishing sets. At a prime containing , its direct-image stalk map is the surjection ; at a prime not containing , the target stalk is zero, since an element of is inverted. Hence its structure-sheaf map is surjective by [F4], proving it is a closed immersion. The kernel of recovers uniquely. Any isomorphism of quotient spectra over is induced by the unique compatible quotient-ring map, so is unique. In particular gives the empty immersion, also when .
