How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Continuous ball-mean-value functions are harmonic
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Countable Choice. If has the ball mean-value property, then and .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: Countable Choice, an open with , and with the ball mean-value property.
Polar coordinates for nonnegative Borel functions hold under Countable Choice (Polar coordinates decompose Lebesgue measure into r^{n-1} dr d sigma).
The sphere and ball measure formulas hold under Countable Choice (Sphere and ball measures scale in Rn).
A radial mollifier fixes a continuous function with the spherical mean-value property under Countable Choice (Radial mollification fixes local mean-value functions).
Convolution of a locally integrable function with a smooth compactly supported mollifier is smooth under Countable Choice (Convolution with a mollifier is smooth, and derivatives pass under the integral sign).
The second-order Taylor formula has a Peano remainder for functions (Second-order Taylor expansion ).
Proof
Fix and with . Polar coordinates and the ball-volume formula give, for , . Here is continuous in : is uniformly continuous on the compact closed ball, and the sphere measure is finite. Differentiating the two sides for gives , hence the spherical mean-value property.
To justify smoothness locally, choose and with . Define on to equal on and zero outside it. This is locally integrable, since is bounded on the compact closed -ball. Choose a radial mollifier with . For every its convolution with uses only values inside , so step 1.1 and [L3] give . The convolution is smooth by [L4]. Since was arbitrary, .
Taylor's formula at any gives uniformly as . Averaging over kills the linear and off-diagonal quadratic terms by reflection symmetry. Rotation symmetry makes every diagonal second moment equal; their sum is by the polar formula and the ball-volume formula. Thus each diagonal moment is , and .
The ball mean-value identity makes the left side equal to . Divide step 3.1 by and let to obtain . The point was arbitrary.
