How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Sector restriction as observable algebra
Statement
Assume Countable Choice. Let be a finite orthogonal direct sum of nonzero complex Hilbert spaces, with , and let be the orthogonal projection onto . Write for the algebra of bounded linear operators on . Let be the block-diagonal subalgebra
For every trace-class operator on , define . Then, for every ,
Thus and define the same trace functional on the specified block-diagonal algebra. This is relative to the declared algebra; it implies no universal superselection law for a larger observable algebra.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: Countable Choice; the finite orthogonal decomposition ; its orthogonal projections ; a trace-class operator ; and a bounded operator .
Countable Choice (AC) is the choice-function principle for every countable family of nonempty sets. The Axiom of Countable Choice ()
A trace-class operator has a nuclear representation with ; its trace is the absolutely convergent, basis-independent trace sum. For every bounded , both and are trace class and ; the trace is linear on finite sums. Nuclear bounded cyclicity for trace-class operators
Proof
Since and , expansion gives . This is a finite sum, and every summand is trace class by [F1], so taking its trace term by term is legitimate.
If , cyclicity in [F1] gives , since orthogonality gives . The remaining terms are . Because is block diagonal, , so their sum is exactly . This proves the statement.
Remarks
The paper cited above discusses additional physical assumptions behind a mass superselection argument. This theorem proves only equality of trace functionals for the explicitly chosen block-diagonal algebra.
