How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Gauge averaging and flatness commute
Exact finite-dimensional group-valued lattice projector model on a closed connected cellulation; no perturbation-stability or thermodynamic-limit claim.
Statement
Let be a finite group and let be a finite oriented cellulation of a closed connected surface, with vertex gauge permutations , vertex averages , face flatness projectors , and Hamiltonian defined using the group-element edge basis and oriented boundary holonomies. Here an orthogonal projection means a linear map with ; a self-adjoint operator is positive when for every ; and the finite sum is frustration-free when its summands have a common nonzero kernel vector. Its ground energy means its least eigenvalue. Then all and are commuting orthogonal projections. The Hamiltonian is positive and has a nonzero common zero vector for all terms and ; hence the finite model is frustration-free with ground energy zero.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: A finite group and a finite oriented cellulation of a closed connected surface with the edge basis, gauge permutations, face holonomies, projectors, and Hamiltonian specified above.
Explicit finite-group quantum-double data: is finite and the local edge factor is the Hilbert space with orthonormal group basis.
Oriented finite-group lattice gauge operators: sends each edge label to ; averages these permutations; is diagonal with eigenvalue exactly when the oriented face holonomy is .
Proof
For a fixed vertex , applying and then sends each edge label to at an outgoing incidence, to at an incoming incidence, and to on a loop based at . All other labels remain fixed. Thus ; each is a permutation of an orthonormal basis and is unitary.
In the configuration basis, each is diagonal with entries in . Therefore and , so every is an orthogonal projection.
For distinct vertices , their gauge permutations commute: on a shared edge they act at opposite ends, as left multiplication by one group element and right multiplication by the inverse of the other, and these operations commute; on all other edges at least one action is the identity. Thus . Since all are diagonal in the same configuration basis, they commute pairwise.
Under a gauge change at and elsewhere, a face-boundary holonomy based at a vertex changes to : along the closed boundary walk the intermediate factors cancel. The condition is invariant under conjugation, so preserves every eigenspace of and commutes with . Averaging over gives .
Taking adjoints in the finite average gives . Also , since each has exactly factorizations . Hence is an orthogonal projection.
Each complement and is an orthogonal projection, hence positive. Their finite sum is positive.
For a vertex assignment , define the pure-gauge edge configuration . The holonomy around every face telescopes to , so each such basis vector lies in the eigenspace of every . The set of distinct pure-gauge configurations is finite because is finite, and nonempty by taking every . Each permutes , because it replaces by and leaves other vertex labels fixed. Therefore is nonzero, for every , and consequently for every . This gives a common zero vector of all positive terms in , proving frustration-freeness and ground energy zero.
