How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Local flow boxes, adapted charts and the Frobenius criterion for rest distributions

Statement

Let Ω be a nonempty open subset of A (Oriented time-oriented affine Minkowski space (the spacetime primitives)).

(i) Flow box. If X is a smooth vector field on Ω (C^k tensor fields on affine Minkowski space and their inertial components) and X(p)≠0 at a point p∈Ω, then there is an open neighbourhood U of p in Ω and a chart (u0,u1,u2,u3):U→R4 in which X=∂/∂u0; the integral curves of X in U are therefore the u0-coordinate lines up to reparametrization. In particular every observer congruence n on Ω (Charts, tetrads, observer congruences and adapted charts in affine Minkowski space) admits a local n-adapted chart, and in such a chart n=∂/∂u0.

(ii) Frobenius criterion. For a smooth nowhere-zero one-form α on Ω (Closed and exact differential forms) let D:=ker⁡α be the hyperplane distribution Dp={v∈V:αp(v)=0}. Then D is integrable on Ω (through every point there passes a local hypersurface whose tangent space at each of its points is the corresponding Dp) if and only if α∧dα=0 on Ω (The wedge product of differential forms).

(iii) Rest distributions of observer congruences. Let n be an observer congruence on Ω (Charts, tetrads, observer congruences and adapted charts in affine Minkowski space), let α:=n♭, and let θ,ω be its expansion and vorticity (Kinematics of an observer congruence: acceleration, expansion, shear, vorticity and Born rigidity). Then:

(a) dα=2∇[anb], that is, dα(X,Y)=(∇Xn♭)(Y)−(∇Yn♭)(X) for smooth vector fields X,Y;

(b) for every p and all X,Y with α(X)=α(Y)=0 one has dα(X,Y)=2ω(X,Y); consequently (α∧dα)(p)=0 if and only if ω(p)=0, and on an open set U⊆Ω the following are equivalent: α∧dα=0 on U, ω=0 on U, and the rest distribution ker⁡α is integrable on U;

(c) when the rest distribution is integrable on U, its integral hypersurfaces are orthogonal to n at every point and the restriction of η to each of them is positive definite, so they are rest slices of the congruence.

(iv) Scope. All statements are local on Ω; no global foliation, global synchronization, completeness or product structure is asserted, and no claim is made about variable-rank or non-smooth distributions.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: A nonempty open subset Ω of the affine Minkowski space A, the smooth structure of the inertial atlas, a smooth vector field X on Ω, a smooth nowhere-zero one-form α on Ω, an observer congruence n on Ω with α=n♭, nb=ηbcnc, and its kinematic fields θ,ω (Charts, tetrads, observer congruences and adapted charts in affine Minkowski space, C^k tensor fields on affine Minkowski space and their inertial components, Kinematics of an observer congruence: acceleration, expansion, shear, vorticity and Born rigidity).

[F1]

Flow box: if X is a smooth vector field on a smooth manifold M and Xp≠0, then there are local coordinates (u1,…,un) near p in which X=∂/∂u1 (The flow-box theorem).

[F2]

Codimension-one Frobenius: for a nowhere-zero one-form α on a smooth manifold, the hyperplane distribution ker⁡α is integrable if and only if α∧dα=0 (The codimension-one Frobenius criterion, The wedge product of differential forms).

[F3]

The flat covariant derivative is torsion-free, ∇XY−∇YX=[X,Y], is metric compatible, acts on functions as the directional derivative and satisfies the product rule; in inertial components ∇a=∂a on components and [X,Y]a=Xb∂bYa−Yb∂bXa (The flat covariant derivative on affine Minkowski space and fields along curves, The Lie bracket of smooth vector fields, Coordinate formula for the Lie bracket).

[F4]

For a smooth one-form α and smooth vector fields X,Y, dα(X,Y)=X(α(Y))−Y(α(X))−α([X,Y]), and dα is a smooth two-form with components dαab=∂aαb−∂bαa in any inertial chart (The exterior derivative by the invariant vector-field formula, Closed and exact differential forms).

[F5]

Kinematics of the congruence: ∇anb=−naab+θab+ωab with θ symmetric, ω antisymmetric, both horizontal, and ab=∇nnb (Kinematics of an observer congruence: acceleration, expansion, shear, vorticity and Born rigidity).

[F6]

n(p)⊥={v:η(n(p),v)=0} is three-dimensional, the restriction of η to it is positive definite, the projection is h(v)=v+η(n,v)n, and α(v)=η(n,v) vanishes exactly on n(p)⊥; n is nowhere zero because η(n,n)=−1 (Norms of four-velocity and four-acceleration, and the observer rest-space decomposition, eta-orthogonality and orthogonal complements in a Lorentz vector space).

1.1F1F6

Flow box and adapted charts: the flat model with its inertial atlas is a smooth 4-manifold (The affine atlas makes the Minkowski model a smooth 4-manifold diffeomorphic to R^4) and X is a smooth vector field on the open set Ω, so [F1] applied on this manifold gives coordinates (u0,u1,u2,u3) on an open neighbourhood U of p with X=∂/∂u0. In such a chart the coordinate representation of a curve γ in U satisfies γ′=X∘γ if and only if (ua∘γ)′=δ0a for every a, i.e. if and only if u1,u2,u3 are constant and u0∘γ is affine; hence the integral curves of X in U are exactly the u0-coordinate lines, up to reparametrization. If n is an observer congruence, then n is nowhere zero by [F6], so applying the flow box to X=n produces a chart with n=∂/∂u0 in which u1,u2,u3 are constant along every integral curve of n contained in U; this is precisely an n-adapted chart in the sense of Charts, tetrads, observer congruences and adapted charts in affine Minkowski space clause (d).

1.2F2

Frobenius criterion: the one-form α is smooth by hypothesis and nowhere zero, and ker⁡α is a hyperplane distribution by definition; [F2] gives immediately that ker⁡α is integrable on Ω if and only if α∧dα=0 on Ω.

1.3F3F4

The exterior derivative of the metric dual (iii)(a): let X,Y be smooth vector fields on Ω. By [F4], dα(X,Y)=X(α(Y))−Y(α(X))−α([X,Y]); here α(Y)=nbYb and α(X)=nbXb, and with [F3] the product rule gives X(nbYb)=(∇Xnb)Yb+nb∇XYb and Y(nbXb)=(∇Ynb)Xb+nb∇YXb, while torsion-freeness gives α([X,Y])=nb(∇XYb−∇YXb). Substituting, the terms nb∇XYb and nb∇YXb cancel and dα(X,Y)=(∇Xnb)Yb−(∇Ynb)Xb=(∇anb−∇bna)XaYb; since ∇n is a tensor, this is the component identity dαab=∇anb−∇bna=2∇[anb].

2.1F5F6step 1.3

The horizontal form of dα (iii)(b), first part: let X,Y satisfy α(X)=α(Y)=0 at every point, so that X,Y take values in the pointwise rest spaces by [F6]. By step 1.3, dα(X,Y)=2∇[anb]XaYb, and by [F5] ∇anb=−naab+θab+ωab; substituting the decomposition, the acceleration terms contribute (−naab+nbaa)XaYb=−α(X)a♭(Y)+α(Y)a♭(X)=0, because α(X)=α(Y)=0; the θ contribution is (θab−θba)XaYb=0 because θ is symmetric; and the ω contribution is (ωab−ωba)XaYb=2ωabXaYb because ω is antisymmetric. Hence dα(X,Y)=2ω(X,Y) for horizontal X,Y.

3.1F2F6step 1.2step 2.1

The wedge condition (iii)(b), equivalence: let p∈Ω and let (v0,v1,v2,v3) be a basis of V with v0:=n(p) and v1,v2,v3∈n(p)⊥. At p one has α(v0)=η(n,n)=−1 and α(vi)=0 for i≥1 by [F6]; every u∈V decomposes as u=−α(u)n(p)+h(u) with h(u)∈n(p)⊥ by [F6]. Since α∧dα is a three-form, it is determined by its values on basis triples: (α∧dα)(v0,vi,vj)=−dα(vi,vj)=−2ω(vi,vj) by alternation and step 2.1, (α∧dα)(vi,vj,vk)=0 because all three arguments are horizontal and α vanishes on them, and every triple with a repeated argument vanishes by alternation. Hence α∧dα vanishes at p if and only if ω(vi,vj)=0 for all i,j≥1, which by horizontality of ω is equivalent to ω(p)=0. Passing to the open set U⊆Ω: α∧dα=0 on U if and only if ω=0 on U by the pointwise statement, and ω=0 on U if and only if ker⁡α is integrable on U by steps 2.1 and 1.2, since ker⁡α is integrable exactly when α∧dα=0 there.

4.1F6step 3.1

Integral hypersurfaces are rest slices (iii)(c): suppose ker⁡α is integrable on U and let S⊆U be an integral hypersurface, so that TqS=ker⁡αq={v:αq(v)=0} for every q∈S. Since αq(v)=η(n(q),v), we have TqS=n(q)⊥ by [F6]; hence n(q) is η-orthogonal to TqS, and the restriction of η to TqS=n(q)⊥ is positive definite by [F6]. Thus each integral hypersurface is a rest slice in the tangent-space sense; it need not equal an affine pointwise hyperplane. No global foliation is asserted.

Conclusion: step 1.1 proves (i), including the existence of local adapted charts for an observer congruence with n=∂/∂u0; step 1.2 proves (ii) as a direct application of the codimension-one Frobenius criterion; step 1.3 proves (iii)(a); steps 2.1 and 3.1 prove the horizontal identity dα(X,Y)=2ω(X,Y) and the equivalence of α∧dα=0, ω=0 and integrability of the rest distribution on an open set; step 4.1 proves (iii)(c); and the scope clause (iv) is respected throughout, since every statement is local on Ω and none of the arguments uses a global foliation, completeness, or a variable-rank or non-smooth distribution.
